That's just 3 English translations. Your quote out of context makes a nonsense of why Paul said what he said. In the context of the time it was written, who (culturally) was going to be reading it, the original language and the writing style shown in other letters by Paul it's clear he's referring to a method of emphasis rather than what a more cynical person deliberately trying to discredit his words would choose to understand it as two thousand years later.

So yes, if it was the Apostle Paul saying it, I'd absolutely trust him.

There's a lot in the Bible that raises eyebrows because of how translators have handled it. 66 individual pieces of writing, transcribed by dozens or more people over the course of around 4-6000 years in at least 3 languages that don't share an alphabet, never mind grammatical structure that are then translated into a modern language poorly equipped for the task.

The Greeks had at least three words that are translated to English as "Love". Peter's restoration after the resurrection only makes sense when you understand that Jesus asks him twice if he "agape" loves him and Peter replies saying "filio". It's only when Jesus uses the term Peter uses that Peter is able to accept the forgiveness Jesus offers. It's an example of how Jesus meets us where we are, not where we're likely to end up.

The message is hazy, but it's still there.

It does seem like a red flag to me, although I'd need 100% to assume it's a deception. I generally err on the side though that people are being honest, not necessarily because they always are, but I don't really mind if they aren't.

I mitigate the potential risks and costs in other ways.

For example, suppose someone asks me to borrow a sum of money. Well, I never lend a sum of money so large that I don't mind if they don't pay me back. So it doesn't really matter that much to me whether or not they're good for it. After all, even someone being completely honest in their intentions that they're good for it might still get run over by a bus the next day.

If it is from someone I don't know, I'd be cynical - same if it was from someone I know but am already leery about. If it was said by someone I trust, then no worries.

Related to this phrase is when I hear someone say "to be honest with you" - which I've always found to be odd because it leads me to believe everything else that person says without the qualifier phrase is questionable :)
