If you are 18 and she is 14, that is illegal and you will also be ridiculed by virtually everyone who knows you. If you are 68 and she is 64, no one will even consider that to be an age gap.

Your question is too simple. An appropriate age gap changes as we get older.

It really depends on the ages. After a certain point, age doesn't really matter because both people are well into adulthood and if they share similar values, goals and outlooks on life then it can be a great match.

For example, an 18 year old fresh out of high school dating a 35 year old single dad is... quite weird to me. However, a 24 year old with a degree and career living on her own dating the same 35 year old single dad is not that weird despite the age gap.

@Thatguy2394 I'm dating a guy much younger than me. We work in the same area and would see each other and have a quick chat and joke around. We just clicked. Maybe 6 months later he gave me his number. I knew he was young but not that young. At the time we were 25 and 42

My parents have a seven year age gap. They seem fine.

The guy I'm into is ten years older than I am. I don't necessarily see that as a problem, but I suspect he would.

I think once someone's a legal adult, it's their business to decide what an acceptable age gap is for them. That's no one else's business as long as there's not actual abuse happening.

The general rule is half the older person's age + 7 years, but at the lower end it's a little more complicated. This means a 20 year old could date as young as 17 year old & not be too weird, & a 30 year old could go as young as 22. But this is just a very general measure.

@Thatguy2394 it isn't to say that they have to be those ages exactly, just within the range. So a 30-year old could date anything 22 and up without being creepy.

Of course, everyone is at different maturity levels. I worked with a guy who was 19 & married a 32-year old woman.

As long as they both are of legal age and truly want to be in a relationship with one another I see no reason why it is anyone else’s business. 50 years would be okay in my opinion. As long as they both are willing to put forth the effort it would take to make it work out.

I think the older you are, the larger the acceptable difference becomes. I’ve heard the rule of thumb of half your age minus 7 as the youngest acceptable age.

As long as they are both adults, it doesn't matter much as long as they are both happy. My dad was 5.5 years older than my mom and it worked well for them. My boyfriend is 4 years older. Whatever works.

As long as they are both over 18 I'd say 5 years older / younger is the limit I'd set. of course only older for me. Don't think it would be a good idea for me to be seen hitting on 16 year old girls.

@sweetdripp The rule of thumb is half your age plus 7. So if the guy is 50 he can date someone who is 32. If he's 30 he can date someone who's 22.
