Me (24M) and my girlfriend (26F) have been together for about 2 1/2- 3 years (we broke up in between that period) are in a long distance relationship. She has Cerebral Palsy and she has a county waiver to have professionals help take care of her. I am considered disabled as well because I was born with a rare syndrome called Prune Belly Syndrome which affects a number of things in my body. I graduated from college back in December 2022 and I've been trying to pay off my debt. My family is VERY overprotective of me, like to the point where they control everything I do. It's to the point where they get mad if I'm not bundled up when it's cold out or say things like "you're not moving out of this county" because I get sick insanely easy. I understand that they want what is best for me, but at the same time I want to live my own life.
For now my family doesn't want me moving out of their house until I pay off my debt. According to their logic it is better to stay at home and not have to worry about bills, utility payments, groceries, etc. and focus on my debt. I agree with them, it does make more sense to do that. My family raised me differently than what the Western culture is used to. You know? Respect your elders, family comes first, obey your parents' wishes, and things like that. However, my girlfriend thinks that my family is trying to control my life. She wants me to move in with her in about a year and a half and start a family with her. She says the older she gets the less likely she can have kids.
I'm so torn that I don't know what to do? I suffer from anxiety and this has been kicking it into overdrive. I understand both their point of views, but I agree with my parents. It's not that I don't want to live with her, it's just that I want a better life for the both of us and if I can pay off all of my loans then I can give her a better life. In your opinion what is the better option? Thank you!
