This weekend she tried to guess what I wanted while we were ordering at a restaurant and I lied that what she said was what was in my mind just to see her smile

I have been married for two weeks to a wonderful lady. We started dating in December 2020 and started living together in July 2021. She grew up in China and is very familiar with Chinese men but not so much with American men. She is generally perceptive but is not really wonderfully adept at anticipating what i am thinking or feeling.

My ex was insanely good at that with everyone. I am very easy to read because I am honest about how I feel. With her thats one of the reasons she was with me because she would 100% figure it out if I hadn't been honest so me always being honest confirmed she could rely on me. She once did a test in her class where she had to identify 20 emotions. Most people in the class got 6 correct. She had 17.

I expect my next girl to also have no problem at all even if she's not an expert at reading people. I always get along well with autists for example because I am a straight forward communicator. Its not a guessing game for anyone. Perhaps its because I am dutch but I like sharp pure communication because it works better for everyone.

It helped our relationship a lot, i hurt her a few times of course but she always would rather have me be honest than to have to guess. Because even if I gave a dissapointing answer she could then rely that if I was honest about something else that she could trust that so it works in both ways. If she asked me I had a much more positive answer to than she expected she knew I wasn't just saying it. And even if those few dissapointing reactions hurt the good that my genuine reactions did far outweighed it. She always thanked me for being so honest and affirmed she wouldn't want it any other way.

There are different kinds of "hurt" -- growing pains that come from being honest and open in the name of loving, appreciating and growing closer are typically ok. I hope you've held on to that trait. Not all guys have that ability or courage.
