Do you think it’s ok to be friends with an ex?

Okay so I’m a majorly jealous person BUT I feel like if you’ve been with that person for a long time, and you’re basically family, or you’ve grown up together I can understand it.

And if either get into a relationship where the other person isn’t comfortable and they’re happy to cut that friendship off I can understand that. Because it’s still respecting the person you’re with.

It’s okay to be friendly with an ex but in most cases never a good idea be friends. There is a fine line between friendly and friends. No offense ladies but you generally have a harder time understanding that difference then men do. Men usually don’t go around calling anybody they are friendly with “a friend”. We typically have a deeper definition of what a real friend is.

Anyway people think it’s best to completely cut off an ex from their existence and memory when it’s over regardless of how it ended. That’s very well justified if there was unapologetic cheating, physical abuse, sexual abuse, lying/deceit about major things involved, etc involved.

But in other cases when it was just simple heart break, growing apart, etc. it can be extremely cruel to cut someone completely someone out. That was done to me years ago by someone I genuinely really loved and I was never quite the same again after that.

That doesn’t mean being their close “friend” afterwards. There needs to be a very fire boundary set. But having respect for what you two once had is a respectful thing to do. But again there is a difference between “friendly” and friends.

I think it's okay as long as your current partner doesn't object. I don't think it's unreasonable for a partner to be uncomfortable about you being friends with an ex.

I have an ex-girlfriend from high school who I am still in touch with. We stayed in touch on and off for years as friends.

A year or two ago I found out that her husband does not know that we are in touch.

When I found that out I told her I was uncomfortable talking to her because of that and would have to end our correspondence. Then later she expressed to me that she was sorry that she didn't marry me and still had feelings. That really bothered me.

She did not take it well and is still doing what I would call stalking me. She probably promised at least a dozen times that she would stop writing, stops for a short time and then starts writing again. And she uses all kinds of excuses to try to make me feel bad and feel sorry for her so that I keep it up.

I have a hard time saying no to her but I really don't feel comfortable about it because if it was my wife I would not be happy about it.

If you're the jealous sort, just don't do it. Being friends and watching him go out with other people will just eat away at you. Better to just let things be.
