it depends on what the break up all about, if say one cheated and that was the reason, I would find it nealy impossible to stay friends with them, but if it was due to say we grew apart then maybe a yes, but if we had grown apart would we have much in common

Honestly, that depends on a variety of circumstances that equate to one ultimate decision on the parties involved, if their break up was well off enough or they had reasons to remain friends, I see no issue, it's their lives, not mine.

It just depends how it ends and who they are. If you were getting along ok and they are a nice person then good. But if they were abusive, then no.

There is no compellng reason to remain in contact with this ex. For many couples, remaining n cntact means that on of them is hoping for a reconcilation and staying in contact - in their mind - increases the odds of that happening. And the other partner doesn't want that but believes that remaining in contact eases the pain of the break up. Are you going to be okay when he starts talking about the new girl he is dating? When he mentions something about spending the night with her? If you start dating someone new, will you tell them that you are still talking to an ex? How do you think they will react?

I would never be friends with my ex. If I did that I would never find a girlfriend that would date me. It is poor judgment.

I think it is ok as long as you realize there is the possibility for your feelings to redevelop as both of you have probably changed a little-but the attraction still most likely lingers

I tried that. Didn't work out. It's the ultimate pain and you are trapped in there.

You have to over-grow. You have to learn from it. To do that, you need to fly away from that cage. At least for 5 years.

It's completely fine. Breakups can be amicable with no issues, you just knew it wasn't going to evolve anymore and decided it was best to see other people where you could have a relationship reach what you were seeking.
