I would quickly question if the relationship is more utilitarian than based on what you would expect out of a mutually respectful relationship.

Meaning: One or both parties view the relationship as a means to an end, and they're getting greedy, and deciding to cheat to get more of the sexy time stuff outside of the "relationship." Meanwhile, what's this doing for the relationship?

First of all, it's highly disrespectful, it's going to plant seeds in the cheater's mind while they're getting away with it of deserving more, and plant landmines for the cheated... and if they're both doing it... the relationship is sabotaged from the inside out. Resentments of all types are being pumped into that relationship, so don't be surprised when something really bad happens.

Bottom line... it's going to poison the relationship. Even when the fooling around actually is gotten away with, it's going to equal toxic behavior from the person that gotten away with it.

As long as they are happy and ok with it then there is nothing wrong. Humans aren't meant to be monogamous. Besides what else would someone be ok with that one thing for the rest of their life, only steak served on a slab? The same outfit? One type of liquid to consume? Same car forever? Remove the action of cheating and there will be no cheating. You guys do you. Most other people won't agree because they themselves can't accept this and see it as betrayal….. Well, no one owns anyone else, to expect them never to change what they like or control what they are drawn too, is a lot to ask. I guarantee that even marriages that have lasted, there were times they wanted to sleep with another…. But the restraints of marriage and consequences of divorced stopped them…. True love has no retraints.

However I am not naive, I think it is way more common than what people think.
It is almost guaranteed and this is a sad truth.

It is pretty rare when people don't seek external validation or when people are transparent enough to admit to their partner that their relationship is broken beyond repair (thus, they seek what they miss elsewhere) .

I wouldn’t say it’s been normalized by our society and deemed ok but it does happen and I think more frequently than most people think. Also it is becoming more normalized as consensual non monogamy becomes more prevalent in our culture.
