Men who don’t intend on getting married, what is your plan in case of death?

Question

Marriage comes with a lot of legalities, including who is considered next of kin or power of attorney. Say you get in a car accident and are in a medically induced coma? If your parents have already passed or you have children that are not old enough to make those kinds of decisions, who gets a say on whether or not to pull the plug, since your girlfriend is not considered next of kin?
What about if something happens to your girlfriend and she doesn’t have any family to advocate for her? Since not all states recognize common law, what legal protections do you have in place?

I am married but I am afraid that something will happen to me and I will become unconscious and since I am an organ donor some rich guy will get my liver because he screwed his up with booze and dope and they doctors will just pull the plug on me.

I am grateful to have a wife that I trust that will prevent that from happening.

It's easy enough to set up a living will if you think that will be an issue for you that includes advanced directives for a variety of circumstances and you can define a health care surrogate that is either a family member like a sibling or cousin or a close friend.

Thus I have absolutely no concerns or worries regarding any of what you asked period. You DO know that you don't need to be married to make such arrangements, right? Whether they be financial or medical proxies or whatever. While being married *automatically* bestows certain rights to the spouse, nothing prevents those things from being done manually.

It is very simple a will and powers of attorney. I am not that trusting and I am not going give a girlfriend the power to pull the the plug. I've picked a guy for that and he won't be motivated by my will.

In case of death I plan on being dead...  I might set up a bank account for my somewhat estranged daughter, but besides that... I couldn't care less.
