I've always been in long term relationships, but this time is different and I realize that my partner expects me to say ''I love you'' first, how to do it?

I had a girlfriend in college that I fell in love with. It took me a long time to work up the guts to tell her. We were driving to visit somebody we went to school with. I pulled up in front of this kids house. It was getting dark out. I turned off the engine and left the radio playing. I mouthed the words "I Love You" a couple of times like I was practicing. Call me a skeptic but “ I love you” is just 3 words. I reach within myself to find why I want to say those words because I want the woman to know why. Being honest I think I have been taught that by women over my years. It’s got to be natural and your words though so I’m afraid I can’t give you any more insight than that.

It's pretty clear with how things ended that she was just using me as a free place to stay. She ghosted me by leaving a day early for a 6-month "trip" she was planning, saying it was FEMA training. She left when I was at work without telling me, and didn't contact me for a month, with me worried sick about her. After that she strung me along for months, then cut off contact entirely right before she was supposed to come back. I was worried for a bit, but I found out through her family that she was with another dude, and had been for a while.

You're right, I should try not to let that baggage impact my next relationship, but that kind of betrayal is hard to forget. Trusting too easily got me hurt pretty badly, so it'll be hard not to be skeptical if another girl says she loves me.
