Is it common to separate and live together in later life?

I'm 58, wife 53 and big row last year

Both very strongly dug into our separate positions. Now I'm living downstairs. She's in the bedroom. Two grown up children.

This can continue indefinitely.

I don't want to cheat and be the reason for a split and no going back. I'm fairly comfortable. I have the downstairs mostly to myself.

I just wonder if this a common situation?
