What is “commitment” to you within a relationahip?

Is it marriage? Is it just staying loyal and devoted to one person? Is it being your partner’s ride or die? I just find it confusing nowadays especially with people seemingly being in a committed relationship getting into open relationships while claiming they are still committed to each other. Or I’ve seen couple who’ve been together for decades, with children but remained unmarried. How would you personally describe commitment then?

I liked him but not his family

For what it's worth, many people are clashing with their partner's family, this clash can be mild or extreme. It makes things more difficult, yes but not in the way Shakespeare recounted. In today's world though, marriage is not about pleasing family anymore, it's about freedom, and compromising. Unless you're living in a very traditional society, or want to live according to traditional customs.

Not telling that to re-write your past or your decisions, just to bring more perspective :)

I've never seen commitment as something to formalize or say explicitly, it was never needed. It was understood mutually and implicitly, each time.

Being your partners choice as opposed to being thier option.

I mean I could go into detail with a lot of the things you said. But I think if you really care about someone. If you really care about thier needs. If you don't want to hurt them. The other stuff falls into place. I'm not saying it doesn't still take work. Every relationship does. But it all starts with your partner choosing you over all others. You make a conscious choice to put that person at the center of your life and build it around them. So you grow as one.

Maybe I'm too idealistic but that's the way I see it.

The intention of marriage and children should we remaining lucky and healthy.

With that they'll get a man who intends to work hard, take care of the finances, and be a respectable family man.

Whether that's ride or die or whatever is irrelevant in my opinion, when I make my marriage vows they will be made with the legitimate intention to keep them and for me to be accountable to those words, and I am Catholic so i see it as my word to God that this woman would be my loyal partner through life and I hers.

Marriage is a commitment a lifelong one. Anything else such as boyfriend /girlfriend is not. To me that's very high school get to the point.
