Well, what is the benefit or purpose of marriage in the modern day? Divorce occurs in the majority of marriages. People often have sex before marriage now. Usually live together before being married now, too. Everyone is poor, so it's not just the man who goes to work anymore. Women don't tend the house and children on their own anymore. A lot of people can't even afford children anymore.

So what purpose does marriage serve now? Tax incentives? Superficial rings, pictures, and titles?

Before, sex or cohabitation before marriage wasn't common. It was strongly frowned upon. So the benefit of marriage was having a family. Something you couldn't really do otherwise. It mattered because doing so before marriage led to being a social outcast, which was an especially big deal back in the day when community was pretty essential to survival.

Today, the dad can stay home and tend the house and take care of the children. And they do, alongside the wife/mother. Because, as you and I both said, they can't afford to do otherwise. And the result? Everyone sucks. Children aren't getting the time and attention required to be raised appropriately. They are less-educated, poorly behaved, and socially inept.

Why do kids have to do with marriage? As I said above, you didn't have sex before marriage. Which means you didn't have kids before marriage. A child born out of wedlock was a bastard and would face discrimination for it.

Does marriage only work when you're forced to be married? No. And no one implied such. However, the "til death do you part" bit did serve a purpose. Marriage has always, on paper, been voluntary. Ending a marriage, however, used to be nearly impossible. Which meant that people had to make their marriage work instead of abandoning ship at the first sign of trouble. Or because they got bored. And if you can leave a marriage, you may as well just be roommates.

Do I want to control someone? No. I think marriage is stupid. Because we live in the modern day. And in the modern day, it serves no purpose because we don't have the same values that we used to. There are no consequences to not getting married. There are no benefits to being married. Marriage is archaic and obsolete.

Probably because the divorce rate is so high nowadays that marriage is treated basically like just another relationship. People don’t seem to take the vows of marriage as seriously anymore.

Let's take the western idea of marriage. It used to mean that the woman was considered lesser, and had to support the husband and raise children and in exchange was supposed to be taken care of.

Now that dynamic is mostly gone in the west, and if you still want that, you'd need the middle east or some asiatic nations.

Now as a more broad concept, marriage was about unity. Nowadays you have people constantly cheating, distrusting their partners and seeking to screw them financially or socially.
