I guess it depends how long the relationship has been.

If it's been many years, like more than 5 ... You probably wanna be gentle about it and just say you don't feel like you're in the right place and can't do it anymore. They'll have lots of questions, but you can be honest if you never had the courage to end before but now you do..

You probably still have lessons and good times shared so you can thank them for that, and tell them that you just need to leave now.

If the person gets aggressive though, probably wanna limit contact

By biting the bullet and choosing to do the uncomfortable part now rather than later. Ending it sounds inevitable and if you feel that way your partner probably also does to some extent so do it sooner not later.
