The whole idea of wedging in the word “friends” is so that you have the sex but not the exclusivity


That looks good on paper, only.


Because in real life it’s handled case by case.
Some people are bit more possessive than others.
Some people don’t want the added risk of infection that comes from having a partner with countless active partners of their own.


Which is why I think the whole friends with benefits concept is flawed.
More often than not it ends either with an upgraded status or just by stopping.


Personally: I prefer the gradual dating approach. Meaning starting casual.
Exclusive, but also not rushing to mix friends and meet parents and make things public.
Just the two people having their own adult fun.
And if with enough time both parties feel like they’re growing closer then you rank it up to official dating and open the way for more serious commitments down the line.


But the friends with benefits is a misstep because it closes off a lot of potential especially if one partner is having more sex than the other

I would think that the whole point of FWBs is that there IS no commitment. You see them for sex, nothing much else.

They're not someone you talk over your troubles to, or chat to about daily events or your garden.

You check in with each other when you've got the itch. You relieve it and agree to check in again when it re-arises.

They probably should be allowed to have another partner. Because odds are if they're a friends with benefits then they are outside your league anyhow. I mean you can expect faithfulness only to you, but you're probably going to be disappointed with the results.

Part of the attraction of being a friend with benefits is that you don't have to commit and you can be exclusive or not and there aren't any issues over monogamy.
