Ask yourself why you are unhappy and ask yourself what is the reason you are unhappy with your spouse? Most relationships fail because one partner decides they want to be selfish all of a sudden , they decide it’s their partners’ fault why they are unhappy , when it’s really the unhappy person’s fault. If your partner is neglecting your wants and needs then you are best to have a sit down talk with them and express your feelings of concern to them without pointing fingers at them first. Use the word I instead of you. Don’t say you did this and you do that , just say I am feeling unhappy in this marriage, I feel my wants and needs aren’t being met between us. I don’t know why I don’t know why I am feeling this way. I want to feel wanted and appreciated and for whatever reason I am not feeling that way anymore with us. Something is missing and I want to fix this with you. Give your partner time to process what you just said and hear what they have to say. If they love and care about you they will want to fix this with you , if they don’t love and care about you they will just ignore you and not care about your feelings , if that’s the case? Then you have your answer to walk to the other way , but if they do love you they will do what they have to do to stay by your side and try to fix what is causing you to be unhappy.

Two guys bump into each other in a bar:

Hey, Bill! I haven't seen you in a long time! How've you been?
    Well, I just got married!
    Oh! That's good!
It's not that good, she's very homely!
    Oh, That's bad!
It's not that bad, she's very wealthy!
    Oh! That's good!
It's not that good, she's very stingy!
    Oh, That's bad!
It's not that bad, she built me a new house!
    Oh! That's good!
It's not that good, the house burnt down!
    Oh, That's bad!
It's not that bad, she was in it!!

I believe the first thing to do is think and reflect over what makes you unhappy in the relationship and whether or not it's because of something else, or not.

Then talk with your partner about it properly.

If there's no way of changing anything, that's where I would consider leaving.

Why would you? Being in any relationship or marriage is a choice, not an obligation. So anyone who is miserable doesn't need to stay in it any longer than they want to.

  • As a relationship coach, my aim on Girls Ask Guys is to sprinkle some magic into your love life. Staying in a marriage when you're unhappy can feel like swimming against the current. Communication is key—talk to your partner and express your feelings. Finding common ground can reignite the spark. Explore activities that make you happy and involve your partner. Remember, it’s important to evaluate if staying is best for your mental and emotional health. You've got this, and sometimes a little lovebombing can go a long way in bringing back those butterflies! 📚✨💑

Staying unhappy isn’t healthy for either of you. Communicate openly with your partner about how you feel and see if things can improve. Counseling might help, but if nothing changes, consider whether staying is truly the best option for both of you.

Imagine any friendship you have and depending on that one person to provide you happiness. That's not a good expectation to have for a friend, so why would it belong in a marriage?

The sooner people realize they are responsible for their own happiness, the sooner they will find themselves in a "happy" marriage.

I don’t think I could , not indefinitely. I’m sure a lot of marriages go through tough times but I m sure I’d be choosing to try and work through them. Not just accepting that it’s unhappy. I’d have to walk away.

    Fix it.

"I, _____, take thee, _____, to be my wedded wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part."

Why say it if you don't mean it?

Staying in an unhappy marriage is a deeply personal decision with no easy answers. There is no “right” or “wrong” answer, and what works for one couple may not work for another.

I’d prepare myself for the inevitable break up. I might as well distract myself from my sorrows with work, setting goals to have more money to help me stand alone independently. I also might as well fix any or all that I find wrong with myself so I’m more attractive to potential new partners. I’ll probably pick up a new hobby along the way.

For men, we do it for the children. As a man you have to put your family first and suck it up.
