Why does my ex make it seem like he wants me but is with someone else?

He's with someone and apparently she's okay with him flirting and talking to me. I told him I'm okay with just being friends. I don't want flirting. The issue is he doesn't talk to me like I'm friends with benefits or a friend, he talks to me like he's full on in love with me. Everytime he messages me it's "I still love you, you're the best connection I've had, I want you around, etc" It's like even when I just accept the L and say "I'm glad we're friends" he doesn't acknowledge it, or when i say im glad you found someone to be with, im happy we could salvage this it's like I'm in some weird area. He won't even talk about her which is strange to me.

It was because I was always wanting to break up with him due to insecurities, but I never would. We mutually broke up but I wanted to fix things. Now he won't take me back but still even when I agree to just friends without the flirtatious crap he still flirts and spills his heart out to me. He told me he used to call me his wife to all his friends and even wanted to marry me at some point. I'm like then wtf don't you wanna just work on things in the back of my mind but I accept these things because I have to.

I'm not sure he is defo sending mixed messages.. He might be just leading you on to keep you as an option or he likes the attention you give him so he doesn't want to lose it.. I would probably just ask him straight out, Do you want to get back together, or how come he keeps binging up the past and saying he loves you if he doesn't want to? Communication is key to these types of annoying situations.

my thing is though, if it's just an attention thing, then why doesn't he just get it from the girl he's with now. I'm an emotional wreck thinking about it all lol thank you for taking the time and answering

I can only guess that he doesn't really like the girl he is with because why would he have such a desire to stay friends with you? I think you should talk to him about it because he really is sending mixed feelings. Try not to worry tho regardless of what he says but be honest to him about your own feelings and how what he does makes you feel. Good luck!
