Emotionally complicated people often confuse preferences with mental or emotional needs because they carve out an identity for themselves that is based on their relative social position in comparison to others and not on the basic essentials of a living position.

There's a difference between getting by and being ok. If you're on medicaid, TANF, SNAP, section 8 etc you are not doing OK. Middle class workers are economically fragile, and most people in the USA don't have an emergency fund at all, much less a properly funded one (3 months rent, bills and food money).
