I have heard some people say this , basically saying they are afraid to show their true love to someone even though they are head over heels in love with that someone, because they are afraid that someone , will end up hurting them and breaking their heart , if they give them their full heart completely. Have you ever experienced this or did this to someone you loved? Basically you hold walls up to protect yourself if that other person decides they no longer love you the same.

The closest thing in my experience was living with a woman for two years. We got along great and had the best time together. She was wonderful. I loved her with my heart and soul. She loved me. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her but was afraid to ask her to marry me because there was an invisible barrier.
Because of years of sexual abuse by her step father as a child, she became an alcoholic as a teen, got married and had a kid at age 17. She got divorced and gave custody to the dad a couple years later and moved away.
She was 30 when we met. By then, she had been in therapy for years, kicked alcohol, gained a good career, and supported herself. She was beautiful, fun, funny, smart, plucky, hard working, ethical, and determined to survive.
But she was still fighting demons. She still couldn't yet face them completely, let alone share her fears and insecurities with me. And she couldn't trust men completely for fear of being used, abused or abandoned.

We wound up separating because I don't think we could have made it through thick and thin as partners for life.

Being away from her was the most pain I have ever experienced. It took me over a year to pull myself together. But I wouldn't trade the two years I had with her for anything. It had been bliss; the experience of a lifetime. I still love her and will never forget her. The memory of her and our time together is a treasure beyond price.

I don't know if it's tragic that you guys weren't able to make it work or if you're better off. Cause it sounds like she really need you for stability she sounds like she was her own worst enemy.

@ChiTown33. She was very happy in our relationship; probably the happiest she had been up to that point in her life. She confided in me somewhat. But she was still in therapy and battling her own internal demons. There were things she couldn't face or talk about.

Her step father had sexually molested her from a very young age for over 10 years until she reached puberty. That would have destroyed most people, but she managed to pull herself up. I can't express what an amazing and wonderful person she was. She was a hero.

After our separation, I struggled for years to understand what happened between us. To some extent, I think I failed her. I was incapable of understanding what she was going through and what she needed. I think I took her for granted. I was completely happy and assumed that she was, too.

I think she needed emotional safety and security, tenderness, completely love and dedication. And even though she was the first woman I ever admired and loved with my whole heart, I don't think I demonstrated those things. I didn't know how. I treated her like a girlfriend because that had been my only experience up to that point.

She found me on Facebook about 17 years after we separated. She was living in Colorado with her son. We even spoke on the phone a couple of times. Her voice made my heart melt. She had become even more amazing. She was smarter and wiser than me.
It was a joy to hear how she was, what she was up to, and to know that she was pursuing her dreams. She never remarried,

Five years later, I read that she had died from a sudden medical problem at the age of 55. She never got to achieve her dreams.
I was devastated. It left a hole in my heart that will never heal.

I've been happily married to a wonderful woman for almost 29 years now. But I still think about Petra all the time. She's my idol. But a long life with her just was not meant to. be.

Not precisely. But generally when I've had a one-sided crush on anyone in the past I've kept it entirely to myself... mostly because all the actually attractive women have boyfriends. As in either they really have a boyfriend, or they say they have a boyfriend as a lie because they don't want anything to do with you (which is for the best as nobody should go out with a liar).
Most of the relationships I've had I got by being cagey and standoffish, and not actually admitting any interest whatsoever. You wouldn't figure that would work, but sometimes it does.

I have forced myself to NOT fall in love with them because I didn't feel it would end well. But I've never fallen in love and then been afraid.

I have grown to accept that people will not be around for long in my life. 3 elementary schools, 2 Jr High Schools, 1 High School at least but in a completely new state.
