Do you prefer honesty or kindness?

I believe that the greatest kindness you can offer a person is to be honest. This doesn't mean you say every crappy thought that comes in your head. This means that when asked for your opinion you give it in a way to be best received. I find that kindness often means lying to the other person. Not always but often.

I would say kindness because to me, naked expressions of emotion and motivation does not necessarily make you are honest, honesty is when your expressions and motivations match the judicial truths our universe is founded on, meaning that if somebody is honest about their bigotry or hate, that makes them dishonest about the justice of heaven and the motivations of our Creator who wants us to give everybody a chance and not discriminate based on superficial factors. Honesty means correct living, not just naked and unguarded speech, nor does it mean destructive declarative statements expressed without fear of wrath and hatred.

There is a type of kind honesty that I feel is most helpful to those you speak with. You're right in saying that honesty isn't about saying every little thing, but sometimes the truth has to be doled out in small doses and not all at once so as not to overwhelm the person you're chatting with. I won't condone lying, but there's a measured version of the truth that you can share to prevent the other person from feeling horrible about themselves or the person they love.

There’s a reason we say “Honesty is the best policy.”. That’s because it’s true 100% of the time. We have a thing called “tact”, by which you can pussyfoot around with honesty if you’re dealing with a fragile little snowflake. Honesty is and always will be the best policy.
