What is true kindness in your opinion?

I'll take a different approach to this question from the responses I've seen. I'll address the intangible rather than tangible acts of kindness.

Call me an asshole but I don't think it's a kindness to soften the blow and tell people what they want to hear in a moment of downturn in their life. That may make you feel better when you avoid the elephant in the room but it's generally not helping the other person in the long run. And it's worse than useless. It's harmful.

And it's NOT generally what you really want to tell them or what they need to hear. Instead as a disinterested 3rd party sitting outside their troubles and with a clearer mind, tell them the hard truth of their situation and offer whatever path you can see for them to get themselves out of the dark hole they've fallen into. Give them a purpose.

Sure, they may hate me in the moment. But I'm not doing it to get them to like me. I'm doing it to get them out of the hole they're in and back on track in life. Maybe someday they'll come back and thank me. Maybe not. That's not important.

True kindness is being happy making others happy while expecting absolutely nothing in return and not doing it for social media clout. I'm sick of seeing people feed and dress homeless people, take and nurse animals and record themselves being a "kind person".

A truly kind person is the kind of person to jump in the water without regard for themselves in order to save someone else, even if it means potentially drowning themselves. Not setting up a recording and telling people everything you're doing.

Most people are not genuinely kind.

I really liked what this Jewish guy told me:

The highest, most pure form of kindness is doing something for someone you don't know, who doesn't know you.

He said obviously there's nothing wrong with anything less than that but it's good to do occasionally so you can remember that the point of kindness is to put goodness into the world, not necessarily to feel good from doing it.

Recognizing when someone is going through a tough time and helping out, not expecting anything in return.

It can also be a very mundane and practical, like lending a hand to an elderly person who needs to carry a heavy load. It only takes a minute of my time.

To do selfish things for selfless reasons. like when we have so much happiness it overflows from us and leaks out into the rest of the world, making the people around us enjoy life more just because we are around. When someone finds a way to not entertain their shadow at all, even when tested. I'm not capable of this because of how aggressive my shadow is but I've encountered some people who are. They were usually women & the more teacher types.
