Depends on why you get married. My mother has been married twice, in both cases she was marrying someone she was deeply connected to and wanted to build a life with, in one case she ended up changing her mind and she left, in the other she didn’t and she was all the happier for it. Was it always sunshine and rainbows? No, but both of them knew how to communicate, unlike in her first marriage, so they were able to work it out.


My grandmother, on the other hand, will be married 65 years tomorrow. She has never thought to leave him because she didn’t really have a choice when she married him. She just knew if she didn’t get married by a certain point, she was going to be screwed over by the society in which she lived. She hates my grandfather, the two currently sleep in separate rooms and have done so for the past 15 years. But they’re so dependent on each other that neither can justify leaving. She’s miserable. My mother isn’t. You have to know why you’re getting married and who you’re marrying.
