Do you ever or always ruin a surprise for your partner, I have this problem where I always seem to give it away by accident?

So just to clarify I was out to dinner with my girlfriend and was holding her hand on the table and I was fiddling with the ring on her hand and looked down at it and said...(I forget exactly but she interpreted it as oh you got me a ring (just a ring not a wedding ring or anything)). Yeah so I totally messed up the surprise. Its funny because I gave her a ring today and it is not the one I ordered ages ago, it is a cool ring but just an inexpensive ring from ebay, still waiting on the nice one

One way to deal with that is to tell your girlfriend, wife or fiancé about the surprise but be vague and generic in your allusions to the surprise, that way, they are primed to expect the surprise so they make room for it in their busy schedule, but still do not know the full extent or nature of the gift you plan to give them.

She knew I was getting it for her but it was ages ago, at the time I just said I would get it when I could afford it so she would have forgotten. I literally just was thinking out aloud and there you go surprise ruined, bothers me more than her.

Only once. Can't remember why but I saw going to get a large number of balloons. Turned out she had a balloon phobia. Just as well the cat got out of the bag.
