You ever do something nice for someone, only to get attacked for it?

Sometimes I think I've got people figured out... then someone will just behave like a total monster for no apparent reason and with no apparent gain. I'm no stranger to hostility online and I've dished out a fair bit of it, but always for very specific and clear reasons... yet now and again I just get totally blindsided by someone just getting hostile utterly unprompted.

Just a short while ago I saw someone having trouble with something online, so I took it upon myself to help them out, answering their questions simply and politely, and they seemed glad for the help...
Then out of nowhere some 3rd person came along and called me, and I quote, "a bit of a cxnt". I was confused, since I'd never spoken to them before, and the very first thing they did was to try and insult me for helping someone else. I asked them if they'd got mixed up somehow, and if they were trying to spell "cunt".
And get this, they said they wrote "cxnt" because they were "trying to be semi polite". As though there were any polite way to call someone a cunt for absolutely no reason.
Anyway, long story short I had to block them because they just started deluging me with insults and I STILL have no idea why they did it. At no point in the process was I even rude to them.

Anyway... is this sort of thing commonplace for anyone else? Or do I just have an entire cabal of haters following me around and trying to anonymously pick fights with me?
