I feel like that's something I miss. I had that and it was the best thing to be stimulated in that way. I constantly felt I was learning something new with them.

It’s not just about someone being “smart” — it’s about how they think, communicate, and engage with ideas.

I can be very curious, analytical, creative, philosophical — and not everyone matches that energy or depth.

I feel a lot of people are very surface level in thinking and I can never seem to get to deeper thoughts and feelings.

Honestly, yeah. I didn't go to college or do exceptional back in grade school, but these days it feels like I am surrounded by a bunch of people who haven't thought outside of their own personal bubble in a very long time. Even when you discuss a heavy topic with them, there isn't a mote of recognition in their eyes.

This isn't to say 'simple people' aren't likeable or even pleasant, that's not inherently true. What matters the most to me is someone's intentions, if they're genuinely worried about being a good person despite their level of mental acuity.

So, yes, it's hard to find someone who will discuss things deeply with me. An added layer of difficulty on top of that is if they want to talk about the same things I find interesting (philosophy, technology, hobbies, etc).

It's gotten to a point that when someone can articulate dense ideas in an intuitive way, I actually like being the "dumber" person now, because it's just that uncommon. Again, I never had any higher education and I still feel smarter than a lot of people I interact with daily online or otherwise. And I want to stress I don't take pride in that, because there's always things I don't know and I never want to evolve into a douchey know-it-all. I cherish the moments I meet anyone who can capture my attention, make me think deeply, and make me reconsider if my stances are true or incorrect.

I used to write, so worrying about my grammar was just part of the process. It could be possible that I'm an autodidact? I just research things that interest me. The Internet has always been a good way to self-educate, but it's a double-edged sword, you always have to be aware of confirmation bias. I think "learning how to learn" is a decent starting point. I'm also disappointed in the state of the world (wars, lives exchanged for profit, population suppression, greed > progress, etc) so that's part of why.

I haven't had a lot of people who can mentally stimulate me, and the smartest people (to me) aren't people I can talk to (YouTubers calling out corruption is an example)

Being thoughtfully challenged by someone is a rare treat, but still I'd pick company that likes me over company that doesn't, even if they're smart or self-aware.

And then we have to add on potential trauma responses people can have. For instance: I might abandon people I actually like in a moment of weakness ("I don't deserve friends" etc.)
This could pertain to others as well. Where are all the intelligent people?

Fortunately I have that, what I miss is someone that makes me laugh. I worked with a girl that was so fun and funny but she got transferred. The people I work with now are good people but I barely crack a smile anymore. I know my answer really didn't have anything to do with your question, other than I kind of feel the opposite.

Have you ever had a woman at a US wine bar or house party try to chat you up. It can be excruciating trying to be polite and pretending to be interested in food, fashion, makeup, designer handbags, and leisure travel for an hour. Try to bring up science, technology, international affairs, politics, philosophy, geography, economics, education, sports, cars, or social programs and you get a blank stare while they start fidgeting.

It usually becomes apparent very quickly that we have nothing in common. Then it's a frantic search by both parties to end the awkwardness as fast as possible. Hence why I'm VERY cautious about who I'll engage in conversation. It's really hard for me to dumb it down and slow it down for any length of time while pretending I'm enjoying the conversation. I suck at faking it.

To be fair, I'm not saying that's all women. Far from it. Some women are great to talk to. Knowledgeable, confident, not afraid to challenge something they disagree with. I just try to avoid the former and only engage with the latter. My track record isn't perfect but my approach cuts down on the time I waste on women who are clearly not someone I'd want to be around all the time.

I absolutely love having little deep dives with people on whatever topic. I don't care if it's about the weather or dinosaurs, I'd love to have a conversation that gets you thinking and imagining. Nowadays, people seem so dry when it comes to talking, even when the conversation is open to a variety of possible responses. It's gotten to the point where it's honestly draining to stay in contact with people who cannot have a deep conversation, even if it's something completely stupid or random, when all they really respond with is "mhm" or a rewritten/spoken version of what you just said.

It was impossible for me to find intellectually stimulating people at middle school, for obvious reasons. But I found stimulation in books instead. It was very easy to find intellectual profiles at high school, bless you HS. It was also easy to find that at Uni, for obvious reasons since an academy is the designated place for that.

As a youngster and early adult, I found that stimulation in very few relationships, but I wasn't missing it, so no problem. In my 30's though, I have experienced a total change. As soon as I fell for one girl who was stimulating me intellectually, then I have looked for that in all the others. To the point where I'm not interested anymore in a relationship that doesn't offer me this kind of stimulation. It has become strictly necessary to me.

Yes, it's hard, but you can find someone who stimulates your mind that way. There aren't too many people that I know of, that do this. However all it takes is to talk to someone and find out what they're like and what makes them interesting. And there should be a lot of rapport between the two of you. Maybe similar qualities.
