A narcissist is a person with a neurological disorder that makes it next to impossible for them to empathize with other human beings. While most people are focused on themselves, narcissists take that to the extreme, so caught up in their perspective above all others that they are incapable of seeing others’ if it doesn’t line up with their own. Empathy is a conscious effort for them, as well as sympathy and other forms of connection. It’s a noted difficulty for them, though not completely impossible. However, this inability to connect with anything that doesn’t line up in their worldview causes plenty of rifts in their relationships that can be problematic. They are always the victim, even if they provoke the fight, in their perspective. They have the expectation that everyone can see their feelings as clearly as they feel them, which turns into a habit of explosive reactions. They’re not an inherently malicious group of people, but they see the world as a competition for who can be the “most good” person and they believe everyone is in competition with them, which is why they’ll make a show of grand gestures of kindness in the name of receiving public praise.
