I'm honestly not sure what to recommend other than keep doing what your doing and keep being friends. If they break up then bring up that you miss him and want to try again and if they don't you still have a friend.

Although being 100% honest I always saw being friends with an ex as a red flag when dating and this is case and point why. Men and woman can really only be friends if one of them is gay. Sex always gets in the way in some capacity for example you broke up and stayed friends and now you miss him but he's seeing someone else. This is exactly why I always recommend ex's cut all ties once you're dating you have to decide "Do I like this person enough I want to spend the rest of my life with them?" or "I can't do this forever we have to go our separate ways. If you want to wait around and hope things change that's up to you but it will probably just hurt you emotionally long term.
