As someone in a toxic relationship, I definitely think it's what happens in the bad times that matters most. Choosing to take the high road because you love the person (and yourself) in front of you enough to not continue a fight that you know will only hurt you both more is super important. Obviously, this is just one example. It's not the situation/problem/feeling that matters, it's what you do about it after it's presented to you.
In good times every one would love you it's like a fresh and young flourishing flower fooling everyone who see it, but it's actually your bad times that show you who really loves you for what you are
You could be in a peaceful calm relationship and if confident enough not need lots of love affirmations from your partner. But how much you each fight for a relationship shows more how much it means I think. But of course ideally you need both these things.
So there’s LOVE and there’s CARING… The amount of care you offer someone drives your will to wait/pause and repair things.

i’d say the later is more important, as it’s obviously easier to show love during good times. It’s easy to be lovely when you’re in a good mood
It’s a little bit of both but the way you navigate conflict in your relationship says a lot about the future of your relationship.
Unusual question
Why do you say "defined by"
Do you mean which is more important?
I guess during the bad times... Things can get really bad
And then you can split up
And that's the end of the relationship. So maybe that's more important?
But if say you do split up and then you look back... What is it you remember the most?
I mean showing up period if you’re not making your relationship a priority in some respect than it’s really not a relationship.
How we overcome the bad times
The latter I'd say.
