How to fix things with my boyfriend?

Hi, my boyfriend and I have known each other for about a year. Last year he was going through an important period in his life and thought he couldn’t give me enough attention, so whenever we got close he would pull away and then a few weeks later text me again, which hurt me. About five months ago, he said he had left that phase behind and wanted to focus on me completely, so I decided to give him a chance. During these months, I was also going through a difficult time and was mentally fragile. I always feared he might leave me again, yet I gave him as much love and attention as I could. He made me the center of his world; we constantly talked, he sent me long messages about his love, we talked on the phone for hours, sometimes fell asleep on the phone and spent every free moment together. He also had big problems and said he could ignore them because I’m with him and I’m the only thing he held onto. About a month ago one day I was having breakdown and I told him, “I want to be alone for a while, I don’t want to talk with you” because I didn’t want to make him sad and we didn’t talk that day, but the next morning I felt regret and texted him but I saw something had changed. He told me that when I said I didn’t want to talk, he had to face all the problems he was avoiding, which created a kind of emptiness, like a hole he couldn’t fix. We have continued talking every day, but there is distance and he says things still aren’t fixed. He says he still loves me but can’t understand why he can’t heal that feeling. Next week we will meet for the first time, I will stay in his city for couple months but I don’t know if things will get better or if he might not want to see me again. He used to be deeply in love with me and even during hard times he devoted his time to me and he knows I am deeply in love with him. What do you think I should do? Do you think things can get better? What approach should I take?
