Studies have shown that living together is not practice for marriage. People often don't let their hair down until the ink is dry on the paper. Living together is pretend playing house. Marriage is the show, as they say in baseball.

But usually people can't keep up pretenses for very long. By a year and a half, most folk show who they are. But, after 4-5 years, if no permanent commitment seems in the offing, usually none will materialize.

See what kind of parents and marriage each person has. Those people are their models. If there's good on both sides, there will likely be good in yours. Good luck.

It's better to test that out beforehand. Outdated religious mumbo jumbo is the main reason people have it in their heads you shouldn't live together until you're married. Why though? There's no good answer to that. It's probably something to do with pre-marital sex, which they're all having anyway. It's some weird selectiveness about which parts of the bible they like and which parts they don't like.

As a believer in God, I agree with this. It's definitely true, many Christians are already having pre-marital sex. Doesn't make it right but they are, yes.

@ManOnFire Typically you lose a lot of the things that initially made you attractive to the woman. Ambition, determination, mystery etc. One of the best ways to be attractive to a woman is to have her constantly curious about where you are and what you're doing. When you're at home w/ her you lose that. In addition because woman live an easier life, they are going to take the path of least resistance more, meaning choosing to sit on the couch and eat ice cream vs going to the gym. Overall its a recipie to have her lose attraction to you over time.

Because when "trying it out" is the mindset, you start delaying the actual decision to go through with it. I see it all the time. How it usually turns out is that one person wants to get married and the other doesn't. The latter assumes that the other will "meet in the middle". Or in other cases, they're both at best phlegmatic about the idea of getting married. They eventually arrive at "well... we're kinda, basically already married anyway, so we don't need to sign a piece of paper."

What it all boils down to is that it reveals a two-fold mindset. One is noncommittal. The other is use. Rather than looking at how they will love, support, and adjust to each other and how they're going to become one, they're looking at it as "what will this person do for me and how will the fit into the mold of what I want?"

So no, anonymous chicky down there. It's not "outdated religious mumbo jumbo". I've not mentioned God until literally three words ago.

We got married by a justice of the peace. She had a really nice house out in the country. Her yard overlooked some beautiful scenery, and it was set up to do weddings. It was nice. We just wanted a small wedding with close family. Then we had a catered lunch, and we drove off on our honeymoon. That relationship was complicated. We had a lot if attraction to each other apparently, but we could argue about anything, and everything. It was a rollercoaster ride.
