I'd think it's rather obvious. The one getting all the attention probably already HAS at least one boyfriend and appears to have quite a few others to pick from if she doesn't already have one so, "my" chances are probably slim to none. This is why very pretty girls don't seem to get dates. Boys think that she's SOOO PRETTY that she MUST have DOZENS of guys she can pick from so, why should I even bother. As it turns out, she actually has no one and gets an inferiority complex that makes her think she must be fat and ugly because no one's asking her out. What's really happening is that the boys feel inferiority BECAUSE she's so pretty so, as I said, they feel they'd never have a chance with her so, they just don't bother!
The single girls allow him a much greater chance to get lucky enough to get a date with her.
