Why did my male coworker ask what we were talking about—was he being nosy?

Drove up to Durango for a news event with male photographer and female reporter who is 36. Male photographer is 27. I’m the female digital editor and will be 25 in a couple of weeks. Anyways when we got to the event me and the reporter were off to the side laughing and joking and she was trying to guess who I was dating and I made her guess. The male photographer was off to the side during this time talking to other people but I don’t think he was listening or I don’t think he was. The reporter kept saying “I just want to guess who you’re dating!” Later I walked away somewhere and split up from them to do my own work stuff and the reporter later told me that the male photographer said “what were you and beth talking about?” She told him she was trying to guess a joke I told her which was a lie she was trying to guess who I was dating. Why did he ask this and why does he care? Did he think we were talking about him?
