My wife is a nurse, and she usually handles the cooking and laundry. I help by folding clothes, taking out the trash, cleaning the bathroom, and sweeping and mopping the floors about once a week.
I’m a teacher with about a 40-minute commute each way, and I also work valet two evenings a week after teaching. I also help my mom with errands about once a week because she doesn’t drive.
Teaching has been especially stressful for me this year, to the point that I’m planning to transfer to another school after the school year ends. Between that, my commute, my second job, and my other responsibilities, I’ve been under a lot of stress lately.
The issue is that when I clean, sometimes I’ll make a small mistake or won’t do something exactly to my wife’s standard. When that happens, she can get upset and yell at me about it.
I understand wanting things done properly, and I’m not saying I shouldn’t be held accountable if I forget something or do something incorrectly. What bothers me is the reaction to those mistakes. When I’m already overwhelmed, getting yelled at over something relatively minor makes things harder.
Am I being unreasonable for feeling like the criticism/yelling is becoming too much? Does our division of responsibilities seem fair, and how should we handle situations where something I cleaned isn’t up to her standards?
