Whales evolved from a prior land dwelling ancestor. This is because whales are mammals and mammals arose from earlier land dwellers (ie Therapsids). Darwin noted the oddity of a mammal living in the water and noted that they should've come from a prior land dweller (he thought something like bears) for which he was rather mercilessly mocked. His hypothesis was justified in the late 20th century with the discovery of Pakicetus, Ambulocetus, Remingtonocetidae, Protocetidae, etc.

My contention is that nobody understands it and there is no agreement on this issue. If I'm not mistaken, it was a universal belief among Evolutionists that we evolved from bears, before the idea that we evolved from apes came along. I've been working on my response to you and will be done soon.

When was the consensus that we evolved from bears? I never heard of it. That said it's certainly true that we learn more over time, that's the hallmark of science. You'd presumably never say that there's no agreement on the issue of heliocentrism because people used to believe in geocentrism. I also doubt you'd say that we don't know that the germ theory of disease isn't agreed upon because some people believe it's spirits or humor imbalance etc.

I'm aware of no qualified person who disagrees that whales came from a prior land dwelling ancestor. You certainly have a lot of creationists who believe that they did not, but they have to cite botanists or someone from a different field. Even then if there were some quacky Cetologist who disagreed that wouldn't be too far fetched, after all there are plenty of wacky doctors that believe all sorts of things.

Whales evolved from land mammals. You could definitely see that it has the same bone structure as mammals, it has the same genes, it doesn’t lay eggs. Why people think they came from fishes is beyond me.
