They simply have no scientific understanding, and they don't grasp the concept that their bogus explanations might explain one aspect of the problem, but it "breaks" every other aspect, so they try to give a different answer to THAT issue, which only breaks other things.

Humans used the scientific method to determine that the Earth was (roughly) spherical thousands of years ago, and figured out that the Earth revolved around the sun (and not vice versa) hundreds of years ago. All kinds of things that we use every day and take for granted - such as geosynchronous satellites - would simply not be possible with a flat Earth. Nor would many airplane routes be possible or make sense. You could come up with hundreds, or maybe thousands of examples.

But when you put your fingers in your ears and say "blah blah blah, I'm not listening", what do you expect?

I've met adults who genuinely believe that our government has a weather machine and creates storms and tornados just to target certain people. There are people who think the space program is fake (and some of them use Starlink for Internet!). That's what happens when people grow up being told that their feelings are more important than reality, and that whatever they feel is "their truth."

well quite simply by being desillusioned with how fucking bullshit science has become. i can understand that. i obviously don't believe in flat earth myself but since i have a degree and since i've seen how they treated statistics around covid, i think science is these days more a tool for governance. paid to find what they told they should find. not doing the job that science was originally supposed to do.

My friend ignores the science because he believes it's just one big conspiracy theory, I've tried to teach him that gps works because it uses trigonometry vectors in a round earth model, how day and night works, how orbits work. He said he doesn't understand the maths but that is because it is all misinformation.

I always figured that this whole thing about a "flat earth" had a different meaning to it... rather than about the Earth literally being flat. NOBODY with a working brain actually believes that planetary bodies are flat
