My boyfriends mum is really disrespectful about my religion. Should I say something or just keep my mouth shut so she looks stupid?

Question

She was talking about how she doesn’t believe in God and Jesus etc and referred to it all as “a load of old shit” and laughed. Then she was like “you don’t believe in angels as well do you? Oh for fucks sake”. I’m open for discussion but I just feel disrespected. But I was in her home so I didn’t argue.

Should I say something next time or just hold back my tongue?

If I was in a situation like this, I would choose to stay quiet until SHE asked why I never respond. Now - she MIGHT never ask, that's true! She may be so TOTALLY oblivious to how incredibly rude she is, or so totally convinced of her own intellectual superiority, that she will just continue her incredibly inhospitable ways. If so, well, frankly, that's her loss (and I would definitely think again about spending much time with a guy raised by someone like that).

BUT... if she finally did stop her harassment, and question why I never respond (probably while implying that I can't defend my religion), I would quietly reply that I was always taught manners, and that if I disagreed with someone, it was OK to discuss it but only if asked. And I was taught not to accept someone's "hospitality" and then speak disrespectfully to them - just as I was taught NOT to be disrespectful to anyone I'd invited into my home.

And then I would ask her - do you really want to hear WHAT I believe or WHY I believe it, or would you prefer me to just remain quiet and listen to you as you continue to attack my beliefs and me?

What a sad woman she must be.

I don’t think you should say something per say as you are prob not going to get far with someone like that, and will likely end up you being upset in the end. You don’t spend a lot of time together with his mum, so it’s most likely easier to keep the peace for both of your sake, yours, his and the union all around.

But I’m saying that, you could approach it in another round about way, gently, that could work.

If and when the topic comes up again, and she reacts in the same manner, you can just ask her as to why she feels that way, how she came about to her feelings, etc. maybe something has happened to her that has made her feel that way, maybe someone has made her feel that way, maybe she has personally had a bad experience someone.

If you try and gently get to the root of why you may be able to speak on that and slowly but surely change her opinion or let her understand why you feel the way you do, or your side.

I'd just ask her not to talk about the whole religious thing if she is athiest or doesn't like religion she can blather off your boyfriend's or her husbands ear. But just saying disparaging comments is only asking to make a situation that is blood boiling. And asking for conflict. And if she tries to throw you out you can point out that is exactly why your making the point.

The scriptures say we should always be ready to defend our beliefs, but to do it with a mild temper and deep respect. This creates a positive memory and emotion in the person. She may not accept or change her view, but others who felt such as she does have been won over without a word based on the conduct of the Christian. So try to say something and make it your goal to win her respect at least. After all, true Christians are super good mates.

Stay quiet, it's her home and she is showing you who she really is. She is showing you that she is fine with belittling you, religion is just where she has started. It will continue unless there is a big change to the situation.

Know that it WILL affect your relationship, and decisions will have to be made at some point. Your boyfriend should stand up for you, and let her know that her behavior is not ok, whether they believe or not.

I'd talk with your partner first then confront the mother. Totally fine if she doesn't have the same faith but it's NOT ok for her to demean you, especially around others. What's her true intentions? If it was only that one time, then she is entitled to her opinion and you should let it go and don't be so sensitive. Nobody knows what happens after you die, and one person is not any more right than the other.
