Do you agree with this bible verse?

Most translations say “Blessed are the meek,”

But my hand held bible says, “Blessed are the gentle.”

Are meek and gentle identical or do they mean different things?

"Meekness" is essentially an attitude or quality of heart whereby a person is willing to accept and submit without resistance to the will and desire of someone else ( in this case it means submitting to God.

You ever hear the saying "don't mistake my niceness for softness".

In my opinion that's kind of what it means. The Warriors of Christ are not weak. Having faith is the hardest thing in the world. But when you open your heart to God an totally new world opens up to (both figuratively and literally lol). I'm telling you what you already know here though. 🙂

The bible could NOT have said meek because meek comes from the norse mjükr which meaning gentle. It then develops into meoc meaning courteous in middle English. Perhaps this is where the biblical meek comes from.

Exactly, so someone had to replace the original word with meek because it was the closest. But the problem with old languages is words aren't as specific as their modern counterparts

Well there's no J's in Hebrew, or Aramaic... So, it's very similar.. They just chose a word the fits closest to the definition of meek.. The Bible was first translated in Old English of Elizabethan..

The Bible means meek in the sense that you're quiet, non violent. Meek today implies that there is no choice to be this way, the Bible likely was talking about a passive state of mind rather than physically weak people.

A large part of my learning on Christianity and the old testament (Jews) has to do with language. There were man translations and a lot of shit got fucked up in translation. Try reading Hitler's Mein Kompf and you'll know what I'm talking about. I've had to learn all sorts of shit like simple words like "comfort" actually come from "calm" and "fortification" put together. The one thing I gotta give up to the Islamic... it's a language... not a bunch of them.

They have different meanings.

Meek means humility or lack of ego.

Gentle means without force.

Most religious thrive on encouraging their flock to not have their own opinions and yield to the church's teachings (control). So 'meek' is a more popular translation.

Yes in hindsight.. But the Biblical word comes from Praus the Greek word, which means "Strength under control".. A humble, gentle, powerful person basically..

I'm not comfortable making religious comments. However, based on the beliefs of The Catholic and almost all of the Protestant Churches with regard to Matthew 26:53 this 100% described Christ while on the Earth. Remember what the term Christian actually means! My Martial arts training many years ago helped me find inner peace. Being meek does not mean you are weak. It means the exact opposite. The meek have their strength under control and in that control have found inner peace.

in my opinion meek / gentle pertains to choosing to serve others like Jesus did, yes, meek & gentle are the same thing pretty much. in my opinion the purest definition of evil is simply choosing to serve ones self, that's the path that leads to hell & becoming a daemon. the bible was translated a million times over from different languages and so many documented mis translations, so who really knows. Those that say they do, only delude themselves. Use your heart if you so inclined to believe in the many times mis translated bible.

@NamerOfStars Yes. The point is to go back to the source language and interpret the original word, as the translations make it more convenient to understand rather than keep the original meaning. For example, in Greek there are different words for love. Family love, friendly love, sexual love, etc. This is not so easily explained in translation so it’s important to read the source language.
