They did - back then.

The verse you're alluding to is talking of a battle back in those times. The Muslims were commanded to stand fast - even against family.

What you, and most modern whippersnappers, forget is that Muslims didn't magically appear from anywhere. They were from Christian, Jewish, pagan and all sorts of other families. They were fighting for rights against their own families as well as for the faith.

The verse roughly alludes to Jewish and Christian families to be spared as they believe in One God and an Afterlife. But others to not be spared unless they are willing to pay a community tax aka "Jizyah"

This is nearly real meaning to what it should mean
Muslim believers fight against people who don't believe in Allah or the last day (the end day), who don't believe in hell nor the Paradise, and people who don't follow Allah the right way, the real way of Islam, Jews and Christians.

It doesn't mean actually go kill other religions, it's more like If I'm in Europe country and people drink in dinner I should fight with my high principles and don't drink alcohol nor eating porks, I should fight for my religion it's doesn't mean If I went to Europe I should be a serial killer and kill people for no reason just bcz we have diff religions, As far as you respect my religion and respect me we're fine otherwise if you surpass the red line it's time to go crazy, I guess it's better to go ask someone in mosque in your city and tell IMAM what does that meaning
