I do not believe you have to believe in Jesus but I believe you have to believe in the moral guidelines he taught or at least agree with them or appreciate them. To me it’s morality that saves people and not religion, religion is just a tool to make you moral.

Why would God want or need "a son" exactly?

Also God had many "sons" in the bible. It was an honorific, not a biological fact. In much the same way you would call a priest "father".

Where does it say he had many sons? "Sons of God" was not literal. Genesis 6: 2-7
that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them.
