to live, and to seize while we're still here with the ones we love... because not even this life we actually have, now... is not guaranteed

    A Child Of Mine
    By Edgar Guest

I will lend you, for a little time,
A child of mine, He said.
For you to love the while he lives,
And mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years,
    Or twenty-two or three.
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care of him for Me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his stay be brief.
    You'll have his lovely memories,
    As solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
    Since all from earth return.
But there are lessons taught down there,
I want this child to learn.
I've looked the wide world over,
    In search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes,
    I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love,
    Nor think the labour vain.
Nor hate me when I come
    To take him home again?
I fancied that I heard them say,
'Dear Lord, Thy will be done!'
For all the joys Thy child shall bring,
The risk of grief we'll run.
    We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known,
    Forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him,
    Much sooner than we've planned.
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
    And try to understand.

I like to believe there is an afterlife. I don't think I would be peaceful if there was no afterlife.

I know I have sinned in my life but I still want to find out if I was really deserving of heaven or hell.

If there is no afterlife, I would be unable to remain like I am and be even more vile. I would not be waiting around remaining virgin for someone. I believe in rule of law and order and justice ⚖️. A good leader whether of the house or of a neighborhood or of a city or continent is supposed to be Shadow of God. Padişah (Padishah) without any afterlife like me most people would turn to loot and plunder.

I do think Karl Marx was right. The religion is opiate of the masses. People like me even with a lot to take revenge fear God and end up forgiving others. I had several times been saved and several times I wanted to take my revenge especially in last 10 years I have thought of killing a certain number of people (don't judge me- I had my reasons). I didn't do it when I had the chance too. Most times I didn't regret it afterwards but this two times I thought I would do it anyway. Can you believe me? I am a Muslim and I think of revenge more than anything. I do have the means to do it too but then the thought of afterlife prevents me. I think the world would be a chaotic hell and people would not be afraid to pull the trigger even of nuclear bombs if afterlife was not an issue. Naturally, a lot of people would say I am a bad human being if my reason for trying to be good is just afterlife but look around me too and not just focus on me. I have a Muslim country and the corruption is so intense here that if you lived here and not in some developed high income country you would not spend a day and just wish you bombed the damn place. From outside people hate us, think we are terrorists but in reality we are just focused on surviving. Our people who go away hate us too. They love it when our currency devalues and hate us when our currency strengthens. Then we have people here and they are jealous if someone gets better 10 more will be there to pull the legs. We have population the size of 20-24 countries of average size of European countries like Croatia , land area more than double of Germany.

Anyone, I think people who forget about hereafter are responsible for the problems in the world. Think of it like this, I want something and I know I can't get it in this life. Take example of something intangible like love, or beauty in someone or a good life in general. I would either be content saying I will get it in the next life by God's Will. Now, I know there is no afterlife and same scenario appears then I don't think my life will be same. I might end up like some of those Mass shooters 😐 which clearly thinks nothing of innocent lives.

Following a religion is no guarantee though. In Koran for instance God has hell's deepest pit for hypocrites. Yes people steal, lie and make short measure etc etc and they think because they are Muslim they will be in heaven after spending some time in Hell. Clearly, nothing like that is said. Then some Moslems will say they are from Prophets family so they are pure and will not go to hell etc etc. That's again nonsense, Last Prophet has been declared free of progeny. Anyone who thinks so is a lying bastard. And many Prophets son's and wives were sinners so God sent them in hell. So, anyway, people try to bypass God and make there own wishful thinking to sin. Sin won't be less either way. But it will be even more if hereafter is no more. And most likely, all the rich people will have trouble controlling people at large. Why would I follow someone if I know he is just taking away my limited time on earth for his own use?

Even an agnost would understand there is definitely the Creator, God, Allah or Bhagwan, Pagan God or the Overseer. All will have some sort of reward and punishment waiting for them for the deeds they did

That is such a deep question! Like, I totally understand where you're coming from and all, but honestly, I try not to think too much about that kind of stuff. It's like, life is just so short and I wanna enjoy it while I can, you know? Plus, I feel like if there's no afterlife, then that just means we have to make the most of this one, like, make it count and all.

But, I mean, I guess it's kind of depressing to think that this is it and there's nothing else, but I try to focus on the positive. Like, we have this one chance to make an impact and leave our mark on the world, and that's pretty cool. And I know it sounds cliche, but I think we should all just try to be the best versions of ourselves and make a difference in others' lives.

And also, like, I believe that the love and connections we make in this life will live on through the people we've touched and that's like, a really beautiful thing. So, even if there is no afterlife, I think the love and memories we leave behind will live on forever.

But honestly, I try not to dwell on these kinds of thoughts too much. Like, I just wanna live in the moment and enjoy every day as it comes. I think that's what life is all about, you know? Just living and loving and making the most of every single moment.

Some people/religions believe in reincarnation. If you're good in this life, you can come back as another healthy baby/human with a privileged background. On the other hand, if you've been bad in this life, your chances are greater that you'd be reborn under really bad circumstances such as being born with genetic disabilities like dwarfism, having no limbs, only a few limbs, etc. either that or have childhood cancer with no treatment, born in Africa with AIDS infected parents, etc.

Then some people, yes, they believe in an afterlife, but some also believe in a purgatory. It's like where a soul stays and decides WHAT they want to do next: Be born again (TRY AGAIN), or go up to eternity if they think they've been a good enough person and have learned all the necessary lessons here on earth. ... Of course no body dares to PERMANENTLY go to hell though!

Finally, I'm still a bit confused myself, but I think I believe in all of this and then some!

Life is about service and kindness and respecting others and God. Not everyone has somebody to love and not everybody is healthy enough to serve, but everybody is capable of at least one of these three things and most can do all 3.

That's like asking why do I have to live to some standards when I crave something else? Because of the afterlife... Sounds like a guilt trip and the wrong motives...

I've never thought about afterlife creating purpose in this life. It's as if I'm living for the afterlife, which is a driver to good behavior. Otherwise, might as well live it up... be selfish... and that is the source of a lot of problems. So in human view, I guess there is value in the belief.

I think the purpose is just life... to live in time, to learn to love and give that gift to others. We're all heading that direction... through time, back to a place of no time. But is there time somewhere else and it starts over?

I saw this video, somewhat helpful to see peoples view after they are close to death.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/cNjtypYeJ9E

We just might have an afterlife, physics is trying to make sense of this all, but of what I see, it supports "God" and afterlife. Matter doesn't go away, it just changes form... is one. All energy is light, etc..

There's an essence to us that goes on, I think we want to live true to that essence.

Afterlife, is an universally cultural accepted construct that expresses an awareness that life is greater than the materialistic Self and continues. This innate recognition of not having fully lived our "Best Life" is prevalent within all of Society.

The intricacies evidenced within both the Macro World and Micro Individual Intelligent Design clearly denotes that we are NOT Accidents. Self-evident is the intentional nature that makes our Being as expressed in our Soul, Mind, and Body. .

Human life is not an accidental product of mindless, self-conceiving, self-creating, and self-starting entities or forces that have operated with no or outside of other Thought.- Such a consideration is nonsensical and the best proof for Afterlife is the outworking of the evolutionary processes, which was in and of itself, designed to produce the Beings that God loves and cares for.-This is why abortion is so reprehensible to the healthy conscience, as well as, to the Imago Dei believers that characterize baby to adult as God's own self-actualization through humankind.

To just have fun and do what you want. Nobody can create this living experience on their own. It’s a mathematical form of luck just to *have it*

Not everyone, and especially all those other numbers of semen siblings, didn’t have the same chance you and I did, to experience this thing called “LIFE.”

    and being alive.

It’s for the sake of laughter and smiles, thrills, and expression. All non-stop. Memories made.

Being non-existent is as peaceful, as it was before we were in our mother’s womb.

For now, we get excitement, and later, if not an afterlife of peace and tranquility, and love amongst each other.

    It will simply be bliss.

Pain truly is *one* slight indicator of being alive, and I know for a fact, regardless of the fate on the other side of this, there won’t be pain. That would be absent.

Especially, if the afterlife party people lol repented of any sins.

It could simply be what we imagine it to be, yet I have heard people say (the ones who have experienced “heaven”), as something unimaginable. Yet, when we dream, that’s also somewhat unimaginable.

Some dreams I have had and I ask my waking self: who thinks like this? Tf? 😂

So if all else fails, when you “hover over your body and drift upwards,” think of pleasant things. Imagine the best case scenario and ALWAYS go to the white calming light, not anything dark lol

then you should be fine, whatever the fates may be.

The idea is to better yourself. To learn and grow, to gain knowledge and to pass that knowledge on, to pass your genetics on to the next generation by having at least two children to replace you and your husband. You should strive yo better your family and to help your fellow mankind. There is no specific point to life. And rather than think “what’s the point if it doesn’t mean anything” realize this: for an entire eternity you never existed, and after you die, you will never exist again! So how unbelievably special is it that for 70 to 90 years you DO exist! How much MORE special does that make you. That in the entire vacuum of space a tiny blue marble exists, and for 70-90 or so years you exist on it? You do good, not because any Heavenly Father will sentence you to an eternity of hell, but because it’s the right thing to do!

That is a good question. Because folks who claim life is about kindness love, and being good, can they explain why there is so much hatred, cruelty, and evil in the world?

Religion provides some answers to that

Atheism doesn't. Because atheism claims that people are merely animals and animals are motivate by survival.

Cruelty and hatred, are not necessary for survival. In fact, they are impediments to survival.

There are literally people out there who enjoy the suffering of other people. There is no logical or rational explanation for that.

I’m an atheist, but I have my morals and values. I’ve met some religious folks who mask their hatred and bigotry in the form of religion. Please do not tell me that you’re naive enough to believe that being good and religious are synonyms.

@WonderBell99 No one denies that religious people can be racist, liars, sexists, pedophiles, etc. Just like many atheists try to hide their bigotry, hatred, and misogyny behind fake science and pseudo logic.

If their is no afterlife than what would be the point in this life?

      The question is why.

      Atheism can't answer that.

Because atheists can only point to the natural order. The natural order gives no explanation for the existence of evil.

there are more than fervent religious people and atheists...

there are a lot of agnostic (like I am) that are genuinely good and great people... that do not need to be against god nor against religion like many atheists are... and that do have a very natural kindness from the get go and keep that outlook for the rest of their lives and also despite the adversity and challenges that life brings to you sometimes

it is like @CrazyGirl2 said " You do good, not because any Heavenly Father will sentence you to an eternity of hell, but because it’s the right thing to do! "

I think you're missing the difference between survival of individuals and societies. The only liar in a society of truth-tellers is going to be extremely successful, even if they destroy that society.

I suspect, for example, Putin is fine with global warming because it will make vast areas of Russia habitable, even as it destroys almost every other civilisation.

There are always assholes, in any species. (e. g. Cuckoos.)

Are you sure that in case there's no afterlife this would really change anything? The word "afterlife" can also be interpreted in different ways. A plain interpretation is the material of dead creatures and plants allowing other creatures to thrive.

Actually there's no point, no justice, no reason for the phenomenon called life. To quote some mystic: "Breathing in, breathing out, there's only life itself".

On the practical side, whether there is or not an afterlife, there is the truth of suffering, and doing our best to make this world a better place can only be a benefice for everyone.

All the lives we do good things, believing there are forces in nature- one good and the other bad. We’ve been programmed to react, respond, help, deny, agree, accompany, abandon accept and refuse as per circumstances. We’ve been told of the good and bad, of the kind and evil, the crooks and manipulators. We’ve been taught morals and science, humanities and culture, social responsibilities and etiquette – just for the fact that we can, and we should live in harmony. We’ve been trained to pray, worship the Lord and be fearful of committing sins.

Growing up we have understood almost all the false claims that we’ve been told throughout our lives. Beginning from the very basics that babies are not born by prayers, but sex. That fairies do not take your teeth away from beneath your pillow and keep money there, and that Santa is just a normal “uncle” dressed in red and white, but what happens after death remains a mystery until death.

To live it. So many people act like you need to be rewarded for kindness and punished for doing bad things. Your reward for kindness is the connections you make and the fuller life you live. Your punishment for being an a-hole of a person is a shittier life that you live as you lose connections.

Why I accepted God into my life whether I am right or wrong it doesn’t matter , I rather live my life knowing when I die I will be standing at the pearly gates of Heaven and St. Peter is probably going to stop me and question me on whether he should open the gates for me or not but I will answer best I can lol

    There never was a point.

Points didn’t even exist until humans made them up.

We made up meaning as well.

Practically everything you, I or anybody else knows is a figment of human imagination.

We’re all just playing along for the sake of sanity.

You only have one life, one chance to feel happy and experience what makes you happy. It's hard sometimes and I know it makes it easy to wonder if you want to live, but you wouldn't be able to experience anything nice if you've never been born and I think those experiences make it worthwhile

Many cultures believe that the purpose of this life, is to see if you're worthy of the next rung on the ladder. If you screw up, you move down the ladder. I hope the Idaho killer comes back as a cockroach. It might take him centuries to get back to human status.

This life is just a test. People have the best of everything and they live a life of lust, luxury and sin and then die. Another person lives the most righteous life and stays away from everything that goes against the rules of God, he also dies. Where was the justice? The real justice will come up there on that day.

But of course only the believers in one and only one God will understand this.

As an atheist the point of life is what you make it, their is no reason so make your own whats to stop you I choose to live life as happy as I can and help people when they need it not because of some hope for cliche happy ending but because it's the right thing to do and would help others in living happily themselves something I wish would happen more

If there is no after life then life becomes even more important because In death you have nothing there for making time truly your most valuable resource. Though I’m not an atheist or Christian I understand that without an after life it should motivate you not to waste your time on people and focus more on bettering yourself for yourself and the ones you love and enjoying every second.

it’s the urgency that the lack of an afterlife brings me, to express empathy, kindness and love. NOW, not later.
Honestly I feel like the opposite is true. An afterlife gives you an out, an emergency exit you can always have. There’d be more reason to throw away your current life no? Cuz there will always be a usually utopian afterlife for you

Why does life have to have a "point" to it? Can't we just be thankful that were were born at all, that we had the opportunity to live?

The point of this life is to create a legacy. If we behaved like other animals, we would not be where we are today. The thing is, it is not about you. It is about your family and your legacy.

I have no explanation for that, and the only meaning of my life, is the meaning I give to it. Good question.

To experience the entire universe better than any other living thing ever? Most men understand the humanitarian dury of paying it forward. That's why men build legacy and try to give their cuoldren better future than they had. Life is a struggle but the other people and fulfilling experiences we have in life are what make it worth living. Plus dont forget about chic-fil-a #4 pepperjack chicken sandwiches.

Life is in now and afterlife is something sci-fi. If i was 31 i would be thinking to make most of what's remaining. You're all your best days learnings from your failures.

    Cheers!

No one can really answer this since all of us will know the answer in the afterlife because it is the real life not this one.

There is one and if it weren't, we just live, work, get old and wait to die or die when death comes at any moment.

There's no point in this life. We are just living because our parents have made us and continue to struggle because people who have been living in this world have created a shitty world.

Find a personal reason for yourself. Use it to colour every decision you make.
For most people, it's children and family. But if you really want to become CEO and smash that glass ceiling, you go girl.

Many believe in reincarnation. Where the spirit is now reborn without a little or no memory of his/her past.
