In 1 Samuel 28 the witch of Endor summons the dead prophet Samuel's spirit.
Samuel, although dead, is clearly aware of the situation with Saul and prophesies Saul's death in battle the next day along with his sons.
Samuel's spirit is, therefore, still existent despite his body having perished, and he clearly states Saul will be with him. Since he wasn't referring to Maui we can assume he means in an afterlife beyond this existence.
The writer to the Hebrews writes about us being surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses - and since the letter is written specifically to Jewish converts to Christianity it would speak directly to their beliefs and understanding regarding life after death.
Jesus Himself seemed to believe in Life after Death as He promised the repentant thief on the cross next to His own they would be together in Paradise.
Jesus also referred to His Father's House and going to prepare a place for us in John chapters 14-16
Context is everything in biblical studies. In context, the entire Bible, all 66 books contained therein, speak clearly of nothing but God's plan to redeem mankind and all creation to restore it in Eternal AND everlasting Life - the two are very different - with Him after this world has suffered death brought about by Sin.
But by all means pick individual verses out of context to suit your views. The Sadducees believed as you do. Jesus rebuked them every encounter.
Just one question: doesn't the thought of oblivion make trying to do anything in this life pointless? A thousand years from now who's going to care about 99.99% of us? Who worries about the life of Alexander the Great's chief eunuch? Or King David's other wives and children?
Christ made it clear that the life of a sparrow is precious to God, how much more the life of His Children must be. After all, Christ would still have gone through the Cross if I was the only person in history that would accept His sacrifice on my behalf.

as you see in the name of the chapters, the bible is not a textbook. the bible is a collection of peoples opinions and of stories that they heard of or that they claim happened. nothing that is written in this book was written under the obligation of speaking the truth or to do due research about what you are saying.

I have no idea what bible you're reading cause if that was true Jesus wouldn't of bothered to die on the cross for sinners to have a chance to enter the kingdom of heaven. He wouldn't of told the theif next to Him that he would join Him in paradise once they died. He also wouldn't of told us that heaven has many of rooms in his Father's kingdom for the saved/believers. He also wouldn't of said "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, so who ever believes would not perish (aka eternal damnation in hell) but have everlasting life (eternity with God, the son and the holy spirit)". I think you are highly confused or deceived.
The dead don't know anything once they LEAVE earth. Once you die you you will have no knowledge of time or things that take place here on earth among the living cause your time is already up. There are people from 6th or 12th century in hell that have no idea how much time has past. For all they know it's still in their time but what they do know is that they have been in that place for a very long time.
Plus the Jews at the time completely rejected Jesus even though they were told about His coming cause they could not give up their old traditions and laws.

The old testament is pretty much Jewish in origin. New Testament... a conglomerate of Egyptian to Norwegian beliefs where the term "hell" comes from... what do you expect? The tale of Jesus was basically a retelling of that Egyptian guy and heaven and hell were basically a retelling of both Nords and the people that picked and chose which books to include in the new testament... the Romans. The Old Testament (OT) seems more literal,
and the New Testament (NT) appears to be more symbolic.
Which makes sense as these were very different time periods and cultures, right? And it could explain why there might be some "contradictions" that might actually just be misinterpretations.
There is no afterlife...
Especially if you read what happened to Lazarus in the OT.
Likewise, as far as the NT goes, there is no "Hell" in which the wicked go to suffer. It is just a grave. There's frequent use of *fire* and *eternal burning.* Fire is used symbolically because fire is a good analogy to describe complete destruction. Also note that "sulfur" or "brimstone" is also thrown in to describe continuous burning until there's nothing left to burn.
Fire boils water to nothing,
Fire burns wood to nothing,
Fire burns bones to nothing,
Fire burns every living organism to nothing.
So what does it mean when the Bible says something is burning forever? It could just mean a place that is *forever* completely devoid of life, where nothing can survive.
I'm agnostic but the idea of afterlife is the essence of Christianity and the essential conceptual difference between Christianity and Judaism, you know the religion that gave us the old testament, is that according to the jews the king of Israel, the son of god would show up and lead the Israelis to unprecedented victories through force and wars, which is why they don't believe that Jesus was the god the prophecy was about, meanwhile Christians' argument is that the son of God would make no sin therefore not be a warmongering Caesar, but instead the savior who'd die to save us from our sins so we'd reach heaven in the afterlife, that's literally it that's literally the difference between the 2 religions... You have to read the whole Bible so that you understand contextual criticism. Firstly, “under the sun refers to earthly things or earthly treasures”.
That passage from Solomon is referencing those who are unsaved as not having any knowledge of heavenly portion. And that their earthly portion, whether things, knowledge, etc, dies when the lost dies and are not known in the grave.
The unbelievers have lived their “best life” on the earth without a knowing of God and His heavenly portion. Those in that passage that have pursued the things “under the sun” and not heavenly portions suffer in eternal hell…. You know, HELL 🔥 as laid out in the Bible 😎
Interesting topic, but whatever answer in that field will largely depend on level of understanding and intelligence of prospecting, searching or meditating individuals.
Taken literally the significance of the text seems rather obvious, but as far as I understand, notions as heaven and hell are means to help apprehend the difficulties of understanding life, death, destiny, grief, joy, etc. Just try to grasp this: when we are in full joy, and suddenly some event pulls us down into deep grief, we actually pass from heaven to hell, passing from one emotion into another, which can be considered a form of reincarnation.
In my opinion, the promise of heaven when doing good works is a way to tell you'll feel happy, while doing something very bad will take you down to hell, make you feel unhappy. You get probably the idea, still keeping in mind there are many different interpretations possible.

As to why one would want to get to it? Because Christians believe that God is sublime beauty and holiness. Why wouldn't we want to spend eternity with Him?

Also, you might consider learning to discern context. Many verses make no sense and/or appear contradictory until you look at the broader context.

That's one of the great clues as to what's really going on in the Bible. Why would the OT tell us that there's nothing after life, but Christ says we can get to heaven through Him? What changed God's mind from one time period to the next? Or was it a different god? If it was a different god, which entity would want to usurp God's title and deny humanity access to His kingdom?
