What do you think of my pastor who said God protects those who protect His interests?

I remember when I rejected a guy more attractive than my boyfriend cause I did not want God to punish me for cheating on a guy I no longer had feelings for. 6 months later, I learned the guy I rejected was abusive towards all the girls he dated and mentally ill. If I had gone outside the moral guidelines of God I would have been in a relationship with an abusive guy. I rejected him because the bible guidelines said not to cheat, not knowing at the time that he was insane and abusive.

I also remember when I rejected a guy who was more attractive than me cause the bible says you are not supposed to get close to guys you are not married to. Later I read about a murder that happened in that area that he was responsible for. I did not know he was capable of murder or even a little dangerous, but I knew the bible guidelines said you should not get close to people you are not married to.

When I first began the religious lifestyle, God came to me in a dream and told me I would encounter malicious enemies that would seek to cause me traumatizing harm and the only way God could protect me was if I pursued his moral guidelines for how I am supposed to live my life. I later encountered evil people that wanted to cause me great and terrible harm, but God protected me because of my religion.
