What does it mean if God protects you from being taken advantage of?

There were three times where I tried to pay for somebody else where God blocked me from doing it, my credit card got declined because I put in the wrong password, my gift card got declined because I did not activate it before visiting the restaurant, a friend would not accept my money because they felt bad about taking hand outs etc… I did not want to pay for them, but I believe we are all equal and that it was my duty to pay for it cause they had done things for me before too.
