Fear of losing community, fear of damnation, fear of losing your identity, fear of losing power, fear of being persecuted, all of this culminating into actions that force people to stay in your community, force people to allow your community to exist, and force that same community to persecute others to maintain their status in a social hierarchy.

neither, zealots are mad because they actually believe in their bs to such a extreme level they will take extreme actions for it. Yet that does not mean they are acting with good intention or even think of themselves as necessarily good people but rather ones doing what their religion demands them too
