Ten Commandments. Do you live by them & how importantare they to today's soceity?

I'd say they served a useful purpose, long time ago. They were foundations to organize and enforce order in our societies around key concepts, for example to prevent us to randomly kill each other. However, from a political leader's perspective, people murdering people is not an ethical problem, it's an organizational problem. They enforced private property, which facilitated the evolution of trade, currency, economics, finance etc. In short, they were ready-to-eat, moral guidelines, yes, but also made for the masses and serving leaders' goals, since a controlled and submissive crowd is easier to manage, unlike a disobedient one.
However these commandments are one side of the story, regarding morality, other lines have been created in the meantime to assemble moral compasses for us. Philosophy gave birth to ethics, for example, to reflect on morality, fairness, justice, equality, equity etc. Giving birth to humanism, human rights, and later women rights, and later a wider range of individual rights because human rights, back then, were unable to accommodate for the full picture that is humanity.
In my opinion, the Ten Commandments have become obsolete during the course of history, because they are set in stone, inflexible and coming from a centralized source asking for an unconditional obedience. Obedience without questions allowed is death of the spirit, to me, it is immobility against galaxies in motion. So, I prefer to break ties with the old texts, to trust other sources of value, other guidelines.
Yes, I do.
“Don’t suppose for a minute that I have come to demolish the Scriptures—either God’s Law or the Prophets. I’m not here to demolish but to complete. I am going to put it all together, pull it all together in a vast panorama. God’s Law is more real and lasting than the stars in the sky and the ground at your feet. Long after stars burn out and earth wears out, God’s Law will be alive and working."
-Matthew 5:17-18
I don’t really live by them since I left the church a while ago, and christianity too. They’re a decent list of dos and don’ts for living in our current civilization but it’s not inclusive to every problem society currently has and a lot of that is because so much of western culture is influenced by christian culture.
I try to live by them. Some it's harder bc of society (like I sometimes have to work on Sundays).
@Jennz6 same answer lol
@GOLDFISH_smile different question
@Jennz6 I still have the same answer tho
@GOLDFISH_smile me too, I work on Sunday
@Jennz6 well somebody's got to. May as well be us 🤷♀️
@GOLDFISH_smile
Yes 💃🥰
@Jennz6 I think we should go back to almost everyone off on sundays
Sabbath doesn't have to be Sundays, like 7th day Adventists do Saturday. I do think having less places open on weekends would be nice tho (like restaurants and stores don't ALL have to be open on weekends. Some do tho because some people work all work hours on all weekdays, & they need to buy shit on the weekends. So it's not something that would be so easy (also profits..)

Do I live by them?
V. Honor your father and your mother.
V. You shall not kill.
VIl. You shall not steal.
VilI. You shall not bear false witness against
your neighbor.
IX. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
X. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods.
How important are they to today's society?
Apart from those…. Not really since people have a right to be religious or not, can pray or not, etc. Non Christians can follow their religious beliefs / select certain parts they relate to most. 🤷♂️
I have always thought them a basic structure of a workable society.
It is hard to not covet the neighbors wife if she is hot or his car if it is hot but the important thing is not to act on it and at least try to keep your tongue in your mouth.
First of all those are not the 10 commandments those are 9 commandments. Commandment 3 is really commandment for and commandment 9 and 10 are the same commandments.
You left out commandment 2 you shall have no ingraven images.
The ten commandments are split into two the first four are duties to God the last six our duties to man. Where is Jesus summoned up love the Lord thy God with all your heart mind and soul and love thy neighbor. Those two commandments some up all 10.
I try to live by them as best as possible but no man can that's why there's the need for a savior because every man falls short and all fail. The ten commandments are extremely irrelevant in today's just as they were then because if you don't know the law you can't be held accountable for transgressing the law by laying out the law now you know what you can and can't do.
The first three relate to your relationship with God. The next four to yourself and family. The last three to yourself and "neighbors" (others).
I live by them as well as I can. The World would be better off by trying to follow them instead of whatever it is that is going on.
I live more by the golden rule. It pretty much covers everything.
Golden rule? " not gay if it's in a 3 way" ?
Hahaha no lol.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
@mandyfire98 My father used to say "Love thy neighbor as thyself, but leave his wife alone."
Hahaha
I don't kill, commit adultery, steat or covet.
Honoring your mother and father is iffy, depending on your parents' behavior.
The first four commandments are irrelevant to me.
My #1 rule is to try to do unto others as I would have them do unto me.
1, 2 and 3 are irrelevant to many people. The rest are mostly reasonable, and logical in any society. That does not necessarily mean a Christian society.
Almost reads as the lyrics to this Prince Far I song.
i do live by 9 of the 10 commandments. not because of the 10 commandments but because to me that's just a nobrainer. cause i'm not an asshole or an idiot and i do have common sense. the first one is extra. i don't need that. i live by the categorical imperative and if you do that, you automatically don't do the shit that the 10 commandments are prohibiting. except as already stated: the first one. this is just the delusion part that every religion needs to exist.
I try ti live by them! I'm nit perfect tho as nobody is! I think they are very important
I'm in complete and total agreement with @Jessica405
We only need 2 commandments. George Carlin explains why.

I'd say they're pretty important for a functioning society. At least if people generally TRY to live by most of them. I'll admit to not REALLY being clear on what precisely 2 and 3 mean, but the rest make good sense.
Yes, I do live by them. They are very important and things would be a lot better in the world today if more people did.
You can be a good and moral person without religion. Some of the worst and deadliest people in the world are religious fanatics and religious leaders.
Tell that to Hitler and stalin
They already knew that... which is why they knew it was to their advantage to collaborate with them to secure power.
The 10 commandments are important to me and I try my best.
Our minister taught us that the Ten Commandments have been replaced by the one commandment of the new covenant, the Lord Jesus Christ’s commandment to Love thy neighbor as thyself.
Jesus was pretty clear.
Matthew 5:17-22
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment
To quote my pastor "did jesus ever say that?" To keep ten commandments.
But i still obey 6th and other moral ones toward other people.
To quote Jesus.

I believe in God, but not religion. If religion was real, there wouldn't be 10,000 flavors.
anti-religious folks can disagree all they want but society would not be where we are today without religion
for me I just try to avoid the 7 deadly sins as much as possible
I got 5-10 down pretty well. I should probably do better with 4, but my parents make it difficult.
Pass.
See AviatorTom reply with George Carlin's summarized explanation. That's what I am about.
Here's the video he posted

I do my best to, but not for religious reasons. I follow a simpler doctrine. Do as you will but harm none, which covers basically all of them.
True, i wonder if "harm noone" included human fetus? Or harm n kill those as desired?
They ones that are about religion are irrelevant to civil society. The ones about murder and theft are far older than the Bible. So totally irrelevant.
The first three commandments are 100% bullshit.
I try to but only because most of those will make you a good person. Not religion reasons at all
Unfortunately a lot of people will break the commandments if it's legal by the laws of man to do so...
that is true 100%
Thou shalt not steal is ok if you can legally do it it with the stroke of a pen.
I try to. I'm human. They're very important. You see how people are when they do not have God's love in thier life.
yes i follow the abrahamic laws morals and values such as not sinning, my life has been smooth like butter ever since
Nobody's perfect but I feel I'm doing pretty good at the way I lead my life though I could d better.
1-3 are the only religious points. The rest are just about being a decent human being
I don't know 🤷♀️
Nah. I mostly just go by the golden rule.
Golden rule? " not gay if it's in a 3 way" ?
I'm failing on 2 9 and 6
I am good with all of them.
Yes!! I have cracked a couple. Repentance.
Very important indeed…
Some of them.
I'm an atheist, so don't believe in god.
God believes in you
I don't in him, and this is coming from a guy who went to catholic school.
Nope
yes, pretty much.
I try to, but I am struggling with 6 and 9.
No one can
