People's problems with Catholic family life stem from perceived rigid traditional views, potential for conflict with modern values, and the Church's stance on issues like divorce and remarriage, which some find restrictive.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Perceived Traditionalism:
Some view Catholic family life as overly traditional, emphasizing patriarchal structures and gender roles, which can clash with modern values of equality and individual autonomy.
Conflict with Modern Values:
The Church's stance on issues like same-sex relationships, contraception, and divorce often clashes with the beliefs and values of many people, leading to conflict and alienation.
Restrictions on Divorce and Remarriage:
The Catholic Church's teaching on the indissolubility of marriage and its prohibition of remarriage after divorce without an annulment can be seen as restrictive and outdated by some.
Focus on Family Obligations:
Some find the emphasis on family obligations and the potential for family pressure to be stifling, particularly for those who prioritize individual freedom and autonomy.
Guilt and Shame:
Some individuals who were raised in Catholic families report experiencing guilt and shame, particularly surrounding sexuality and its expression, as purity culture is strongly associated with Catholicism.
Family Dysfunction:
Some families struggle with dysfunction, including emotional manipulation, controlling behavior, and unhealthy communication patterns, which can lead to emotional distress and conflict.
Toxic Family Dynamics:
Some individuals find themselves in situations where they are dealing with toxic family members, leading to feelings of emotional distress and a desire for distance.
Disagreement with Religious or Moral Beliefs:
A significant number of former Catholics cite disagreements with the Church's religious or moral beliefs as the main reason for leaving, indicating a fundamental difference in values.
The Church's Handling of Scandals:
The Church's handling of past scandals, including the sexual abuse crisis, has damaged trust and led to further alienation from some Catholics.
Lack of Belief:
Some people simply no longer believe in the core tenets of the Catholic faith, leading them to leave the Church and its teachings on family life.
I was raised Catholic in New Orleans. Maybe we're a different arm of the faith. My mother was a working parent, along with my father. She practiced birth control, though my father had the fantasy of wanting 6 children. There were only two of us. Because of this my parents and we were able to live a middle class life and both kids were supported through college and grad school.
I also went to Catholic school, but during my teen-age years in the '70s, I championed women's freedoms to have or not have children when they wanted to. I also used birth control and knew many gay people and accepted them. I could care less what the church's stance was on these issues. The church was not supporting me and would not pay for the children I was or was not going to have because of their tenets.
I still went to church and I still do. I recognize the positive and negative aspects. Men run the church. They are clueless as to how women's family choices affect their lives because they live in ivory towers. If the church allowed their priests to marry, I bet there would be a whole different ball of wax on these issue. The Episcopal church, which does allow women priests, bishops and marriage among priests does.
So, I choose what works for me and ignore the stupidity of the restrictions because they've been made by men who do not live secular lives. Just as my mother did 75 years ago when she married.
You've got to live rationally. Not by rules made that have nothing to do with how you live your life.
I was raised Catholic and attended Catholic school through 9th grade. I was an altar boy from second through 6th grades. As a novice guitarist, I led the guitar masses for a while after the church started doing those for low masses when they liberalized in around 1965 or '66.
I really liked the old nun's habits and was good friends with some of my nun teachers. They all treated me well.

I gradually became non-religious over the years but I still have a soft spot for Catholic films like The Bells of St. Mary's, Going My Way, The Trouble with Angels, Where Angels Go Trouble Follows, Lilies of the Field. They portrayed priests and nuns the way I like to remember them.
My wife was raised Catholic, too. She had 10 siblings who are all still Catholic.
We got married in her family's church when her parents were still alive. We didn't tell anyone that we were no longer religious.
It was nice because she got to be the classic bride in a white dress and feel like a princess. All the formal pomp and ceremony was cool, too.
Even though my family was devout, we didn't practice Catholicism like in that old fashioned picture you posted. That's one of the cringiest things I've ever seen. Nobody I ever knew, not even the nuns and priests, acted that pious. They were like regular people.
Come to mass on Sunday
Because they live a life that isn't ruled by modern society's whims and fancies. They are seen as other and have rules that make the current society feel a certain way.
People dont like "other" thats why most religious people get attacked or stigmatized.
Lots of people see institutionalized religion as a cult, or they left religion for one reason or another and are hurt/traumatized by it. So when are out looking in - their own unresolved emotions creep up.
It enrages my demonic soul but I don't really care much about family life of pious Christians as long as they don't project their religious phobias and paranoia on others who might have different opinions about abortion as example.
In other words don't have opinions about murdering babies

It's nothing more than superstition and it's a complete waste of time and energy! And, quite a lot of it is based on pagan religions! Look at your religious figures that wear miters and those long colorful gowns. Did you ever notice how they're dressed like a huge fish? The miter looks just like a fish head and the colorful gown is the scaley body of the fish and the tail at the bottom is the rear fin of the fish! They are dressing up like Dagon, the fish god!! Is that what you worship?
The vatican is one of the richest enclaves on the planet yet every church has constantly got their hand out begging you for money to stay in business!! Why is that?
Why does the pope ride around in a bullet proof car? If he has no faith that god will protect him, why should you have faith that you're protected?
Pope John paul was shot back in the 80s and the Swiss guard make him drive in a bullet proof car just like Trump.
The money donated by church goers supports the maintenance of the church they attend as well as various local catholic charities that support the local communities as well as the third world.
Yes, I know about the shooting. The point is, if there actually IS a god, why would the pope NEED a bullet proof car?
Yes, I know! But, with all the riches at hand at the vatican, why do the churches NEED to beg for money?
Yes, I know about the shooting. The point is, if there IS a god, why would the pope NEED a bullet proof car?
I know but, with all the riches on hand at the vatican, why do churches HAVE to beg for money?
I’ve never been to a church that begs for money. Which church did that?
@BarryLiverstone You've NEVER been to a church that passes the plate around?
The church like many institutions is supported by its members. Do you think schools and the roads you drive on are free?
The beauty of the Catholic Church is that you don't have to give to be a member, you could be a member and be homeless and penniless and be treated like a person. I know some churches that won't accept you unless you are give 10-15% of your income.
Of course not! We supposedly pay taxes for those things!
So, why doesn't the vatican pay for that stuff?
For instance the local church i belong to last week fed 1000 homeless and found beds for them to sleep.
I feed people in need every month and I haven't been to a church service since the mid `70's.
We both know you don't.
Yeah! I do!! I go to the food bank every month and they give me a big box of stuff, some of which I don't eat so, I give it to my neighbor and he takes it some woman, Nancy, a few miles from here that gives it to homeless people.
I used to work at the 7-11 in the mid `90's on the graveyard shift. Every night, the Dunkin'' Donuts guy would come in and throw away the donuts nobody bought and replace them with fresh. I couldn't see him wasting perfectly good food so, I asked if I could have them. He said I could so, I'd eat a few and, on the way home through Downtown, I'd offer them to a couple "homeless" people on the streets begging for money. Amazingly, they refused!! So, I'd take them home and feed them to hungry birds and bunnies. Better that SOMEONE eat them than to just throw them away!!
I have no idea what YOU know and I SERIOUSLY DOUBT YOU know what I know!!
I was raised catholic but now I am non-denominational Christian. Most of my family are still practicing Catholics.
However I am grateful I was introduced to Jesus though the catholic faith even though I am no longer a practicing catholic. Most people don’t know that Catholicism was the first Christian denomination.
I know there has been increasingly more disgusting and heinous attacks in Catholicism. Yes we all know went down at the Vatican about 20 years ago. That was horrible but it was called out and dealt with. Also I personally believe that the Catholic Church should let priests marry. The reason they forbid marriage is because a priest is supposed to be wed to Christ. But there are a lot of good men who could be called to priesthood if it wasn’t for this limitation.
Also I don’t like bashing any religious faith. But it is just so beyond insane the way leftists will quickly bash on Catholics, general Christianity, Orthodox Judaism, etc. yet they will never utter a peep about Islam.
In fact some are actively supporting radical Islam (gays for Palestine) which is incredulous suicide. Take a trip to the Middle East as an openly gay person and see how long you make it.
I've seen this. Catholics are on the prescribed list of people you are allowed to be bigoted against
You know that you are always welcome back at mass.
You have to consider the source when it comes to the gross attacks. Some of these same people are (as mentioned earlier) now supporting “gays for Palestine”.
I thought it was some sort of bizarre isolated fringe group of radical far left women doing this. Then I met an open lesbian who said she was directly supporting the local muslim community which is patently insane.
That’s not to say there isn’t anything wrong with being friends with people with different backgrounds and beliefs. But she is supporting an ideology that enforces Sharia Law in many parts of the world. If she was in the Middle East she would be thrown in a burqa, forced in a marriage and likely sexually assaulted (by men) as punishment for being homosexual. If she was a gay man she be thrown off a building.
So again these are the same people who condemn Catholicism. Consider the source.
Spirituality exists, ok? I hope i don't have to convince a catholic about that, although that's not uncommon. Often religionists think in terms of visible material objects only.
#1 problem people have with any religion is shitty members of this religion. There have existed awful Catholics, and although that obviously doesn't automatically equate to all catholics being bad people, you could conclude that a belief system which produces an occasional bad person isn't as good as a system that produces no villains.
Now, there are so many "spiritual practices" in the world, and that's good if they all point to one same truth. But at least in the mainstream variants they don't and contradict one another wildly.
Then you have to ask: if a religion is not bringing you closer to the truth, where is it driving you?
Of course, away from the truth. And what are the chances that a mainstream religion many of whose members are villains, is totally on point and holy and enlightening?
U must be a Protestant
Hmmmm i want more unquestioned presumptions to automate my thinking.
Most people do NOT have a problem with it. There are many religions in this world, and some people will find problems with some of them. Religions that stand out as different have the most chance of disturbing other people. Those that go out knocking on doors pushing their beliefs bother many people. Families that don't celebrate Christmas stand out when others near them do. Religions that do not allow blood transfusions are seen by many as odd. Religions practiced mostly by other countries are often not accepted by others around them. Catholics fit in well with most people.
People are discriminatory and close minded.
There is a reason why the immigrants as they came in wave after wave were met with bigotry from Irish to French to Italian to Jewish to Catholic to German to Mexicans….
People are discriminatory and not open to change, they’ll even make up talking points to justify that hatred of change so others agree with it.
We should be kind, compassionate, warm, welcoming, inviting and not be so quick to hate however some things never change sadly. I accept all people, though not everyone accepts.
I don't think many people have a problem with that life more so than a desire to deviate from it. They may have other things they seek or want out of their family life that doesn't align with that lifestyle.
However, I think it's a strong foundation anyone can build on!
Because other religion are boring.
As a Catholic we have freedom. I can have sex in a threesome and no one would attacked me.
I can drink alcohol hit the clubs and bars go to strip clubs and I will only confess and won't get excommunicated.
Yeah we Fucking Rock Catholic
When you confess sins you actually have to be sorry
So you want to know what is worst?
My sister abondone the Catholic Christian and become a Pentecostal after that she became very judgmental.
What is worst is my parents became very ill they have to go to the hospital.
My sister she is selfish she gives away $500 to the church in tithing but not once help pay fory parents medical bills.
When we went to visit my sister she never allowed us to stay over at her house because according to her pastor we were influence by demons. Not only that she never offer us food. We were forced to at for everything.
Oh that's very controlling. Honour thy mother and thy father. It's pretty clear.
Yes my sister holds a big resentment against my parents for raising us Catholic. My mom regrets in allowing my sister to go to public school instead of Catholic school. My parents are devoted Catholic is nothing wrong. My sister does not speak to me at all.
I do not think many people do have a problem with Catholicism, at least in The West. A lot of people disagree with your beliefs but also respect your right to hold your beliefs.
Maybe I sound woke because about 1/3 of Australia's population was born overseas, so we accept everyone's faiths. Though this has been tested by the bombing of Gaza, resulting in misplaced anti-Jewish sentiment (Israel's choices are not to do with Jewry.) But I don't see any anti-Catholic sentiment here.
If you live in Iran, your mileage may differ.
It’s mostly a reaction
Catholics (or any other religion) have always had a problem with people who don’t share their beliefs
They will judge them and berate them and even harm them if given the chance
So non catholics push back by fighting fire with fire
As someone who was raised catholic but chose not to live that life I’ve seen both sides of this coin and frankly most of the “problems” would go away if everyone stayed in their lane and stopped trying to impose their religion (or lack there of) onto others
POV: U tryna live ur best Catholic fam life but the haters stay pressed 🙄✨ "OMG why they so strict?" *eye roll* "No BC? YOLO, I guess?" 🤷♀️💒 FYI, maybe they just jelly of the *trad vibes* and *guilt-free rosary swag* 🕯️🌹. IYKYK, mass every Sunday > brunch anyday 🥞☕. TBH, fam goals AF if U ask me 🤝👨👩👧👦 #BlessedAndBothered 😇🔥.
I don't have a problem at all with their family life but I do have a big problem with their beliefs.
Catholicphobic?
I wasn't aware this was a thing. Being born and raised in the MidwestI had LOTS of Catholic friends. Aside from going to mass four times a week, and having their weddings take four hours it's just another religion to me. I had a girlfriend in college who was Catholic and she told me the entire religion is based on guilt...😂
That's an opinion a lot of American catholics have that seems to be based on the perception of others
You are Protestant. Geez
Some people have a problem with everything. I'm not Catholic but I have no problem with it at all. Even though I don't share your belief I respect it as I would expect you to respect mine. You are entitled to believe anything you want to believe. And I am not required to believe it unless I want to. Anything else is not freedom and I believe strongly in freedom.
Because monotheistic religious people run on a groomed cult mentality that lashes out at, and shuns those who don't believe in their god.
As a pagan i have experienced it many times. As soon as they hear "pagan" they take offense, lash out, think i worship the devil/satan/evil, think i have no morals, that I'm "a lost lamb", insult me for my beliefs, think i sacrifice animals or people for ritual, ... etc.
I'm a nature worshipping pagan that understands nature provides for everything living creatures need, that it's like that of a biological creature with all plants and creatures working in harmony for it's health (... except humans. Humans have the option to be symbiotes, but choose to be parasites. Some are symbiotic, most are not.).
I don't. I do however have a problem with the way in which AI depicted the way in which Catholic family life is. Like, why isn't the mother also worshipping?
She's holding the baby.
Is it supposed to depict Mary Madeline or the mother of the family? Either way, she should be facing the other direction.
Why she's praying with her husband and children while nursing her tot. If you were a mother you'd understand
My bad... I figured that was her eldest son and her husband was out sacrificing and providing.
I don't, my friends and people I know also don't... so what "people" are you talking about?
If they kept to themselves it probably wouldn't bother people as much. But 10 kids and 55 grandkids, and counting, leaves an impression, especially during carol season.
I'd love to have 55 grand kids
The same reason gardeners have such a problem with weeds, despite claiming to "love" plants.
Catholics are very subversive and war like. It's not enough for them to be miserable in their lives. You and your neighbour have to be miserable like them too.
Hence Catholicism is seen as a social weed, one that takes over if you let it.
What r u a pastor my guess.
Shut up bro live her alone we Catholic are fun people.
I’ve had to live in it with some delusional ways pushed on me that quite frankly were insane. It’s not what you read in the Bible anymore more control and pushing your beliefs on others and they damn you if you don’t agree.
All the girls are named Mary and they get confused.
Well Maria, Marie, Mariah, Mara, Mariam, Marion, Mia, Molly i think are all the name Mary in different languages and periods of time.
Well I frankly know your entire religious sect is built upon lies , greed , murder and domination of others. The Romans created it to control people and make money. And to have and excuse to lay claim to lands that were never theirs to begin with. The Bible they created is a tool of propaganda much like communist chinas little red book. The Catholic Church is responsible for an untold number of deaths.
Not true at all. The Roman empire was already in control of most of the territory it ever had before the birth of Christ and 3-4 hundred years later the religion of the Jewish man persecuted and crucified by the Romans became the main religion of the Roman empire and venerated as greater than any Emperor. The bible is spreading the word of God.
I think it's only if they're extremely religious is when they have a problem with it. That's what I've mainly noticed when it comes to any religion in general.
No one has problem with it.
Unless they knock the door to every house and offering to come to their church to non believers. That’s the problem.
I've not heard much of that. Most of what I have heard anyway is from people who were themselves raised Catholic.
What do you mean? What is Catholic "family life"?
As someone who grew up in that shit, I wouldn't wish that shit I had to deal with on anyone.
Probably similar to why people have a problem with Jews
Jew woman dress like Grandma's all conservative.
So they? I don’t see that. It’s Whan anything becomes obsessive and hypocritical that others start to protest.
You mean when churches are being attacked
I wasn’t aware that so many people did. I am Anglican and have no personal issues with it.
Because it is a threat, a challenge, or an obstacle to them.
All I know is I heard Catholic stereotypes growing up. I had Catholic relatives. They were hard-working good people. I don’t see what the problem is.
No one has a problem with it. It’s when religious people try to force their beliefs onto others that people will begin to have problems.
I don't, despite not catholic.
I doubt anyone has a problem unless you mean "mother with father family. "
I don’t have any problem nor any idea about the details of such a life.
I have no issues with catholics or their family life. I have issues with the Vatican hiding pedophile priests.
The last case was like 30 years ago, it's all historic cases. Measures were taken but as you are starting to see lots of different groups are starting to have revelations in regards to child abuse.
Yeah like the boy scouts.. I never personally experienced it while i was in, but it happened. And its evil.
Or that goddamn gymnastics coach that raped all of those girls.
Are all the stuff going on with jehovah witnesses and Mormons.
I think the only people who have a problem with a Catholic lifestyle are Catholics.
Why would anyone else give a shit?
Cuz it's prudish, confiscatory, spirit crushing, illogical, contradictory, misogynistic, racist, bigoted, hypocritical and mind numbing
Prudish? You mean thinking it's not appropriate to show your genitals or mate in the streets? To committ to one person and not cheat or have multiple sex partners at once. In the age of onlyfans where a woman just had sex with 1000 men in 24 hours I think soceity in 2025 could do with a little more Prudism don't you.
Confiscatory? What does Catholicism taken when it gives so much?
In what way does Catholicism hate women when so many Catholic saints and martyrs are women?
Logical to someone without faith.
Not sure how you think it's contradictory.
Racist? Really? When so many catholics in America are non WASPs and Hispanics and the Catholic Church helps so many in africa and Asia.
Think maybe you are just catholicphobic
That would mean I have an IRRATIONAL fear of Catholicism. I assure you ALL rational people are terrified of Catholicism. It's a force for evil.
So islamaphobics have an irraditional fear?
What does more for people that the Catholic Church? Not atheists that's for sure.
@DrPepper12 okay please say the same thing when someone posts the exact same question about Islam. I got a feeling you would be conveniently MIA on a post like that.
Yes like that one Karen 😂 n her Alwaysreckles is a prude.
Alwaysreckles freak out and went off on me here when I admitted I participate in threesome. Lol
@blueonblack22. All religions are irrational. The culture sprung forth from them are treasures.
@DrPepper12 why am I not surprised you said that.
For the record I wasn’t always a believer. I was agnostic in my 20s. Questioned a lot of things. Questioned “magical thinking”.
But it dawned me on that believing that life into spontaneous existence is like believing lightning struck a rock and formed a perfectly functioning watch by melting all the alloys and gears perfectly in place. It’s impossible.
But no one abandons or gains their faith via an online argument with a random anon person. It’s not about “winning an argument”. It’s about something you come to believe (or disbelieve) with yourself.
Because they have been brain washed by social media.
I don't think many do, outside of the weirdos who might think it looks or seems "culty"..
My family is "mixed". Catholic and PCA Presbyterian. I like the liturgy of both and the restrictions are surprisingly close. No problems here.
There are rules I suppose, maybe they don't like those
If they don't respect your family life, it's their issue not yours, what matters is that you're doing the right thing, the thing that makes you happy and comfortable...
Do you have problem with Catholic family life? Why?
Because if you weren't raised in a cult you can see it.
Cult like Islam?
I don't have a problem with catholic assholes
I only have a problem with catholic assholes that have a problem with Jews (me)
Like taking your kids to Sunday school to get molested by priests?
The Catholic Church has taken measures but your child can get raped in basically any institution you send them to including kids sports, boy scouts, Jehovah witness, Mormons, prodestant Sunday school, pee wee football, us Olympic gymnastics, school, summer camp and of of course a step parent
What is Catholic family life?
Pretty sweet.
@Gwendoline No, I'm actually serious. Lol. I want to know.
Nobody gives a damn about no catholic family
Plenty do. My Hispanic neighbours do. They are lovely, we meet sometimes after mass. I love their food.
Americans hate Catholics because its too formal and Monarchal.
Maybe pedophilia. Maybe
I don’t know maybe?
You mean Hollywood
Ok elephant in the room
Don’t your priests molest every helpless child possible
Especially if they have a penis
Kinda gay
No priests don't. There was a historical abuse problem that's has had measures taken to prevent. You notice all current church abuse stories are coming from prodestant churches, Jehovah witnesses, Mormons and Jews.
not that I've heard of...
What people say that?
Stereotypes, propaganda and prejudice
They aren't Catholic?
They bound fiwn to false things
I don't care.
Too much restrictions.
Probably the prie alter boys relationship.
Which people?
