No, I don't. Here's why.

Bottom line up front - There is no horrible thing that humans have ever done that is unique only to religion.

1) In terms of war and violence (an accusation often leveled against religion), have humans never fought about other things than religion? Have nations, peoples, and tribes never fought over land, resources, money, or to gain or expand power, to gain independence, or anything else? Sure, some wars have been fought because of religion, but...is that really all?

Furthermore, say you have a religious nation and the non-religious nation next door attacks them - or in other words, is the aggressor - and the religious nation fights back. Is the religious nation still to blame for the conflict?

Lastly, on this score, if you believe in evolution, if you are to be logically consistent, you have to accept that man had a "primal", animalistic stage that still remains a part of man's nature. I say this because people often claim that humans are really just animals who need to obey their urges when it comes to sex. You have to accept that man has always had disordered and unregulated passions with anger, desire for power and control, and other things not related to sex.

2) People often claim that religion is about power and control. To that, I say what's so terrible about that? Is it really the worst thing ever if there is an outside influence that has ritual and tradition, a unifying hierarchy, that has a philosophical and theological system about it, and that examines the conscience and the soul in order to correct vice and build virtue? And following from that, provides community and commonality of belief, and ultimately, a sense of purpose and meaning to one's life?

Sure, sometimes people get power-hungry, but that's hardly unique to religious faith.

3) Another common claim is that religion causes division. To that, I say yeah, what's your point? When you have a large enough group of people, there will common personalities and interests which can and will be at odds with another. There would still be an "us vs. them" mentality. Do you really think that someone calling me a racist, sexist, bigot when I'm minding my own business is going to put a positive image of me in other people's heads if they don't already know me and how and why I think the way I do? If a socialist points at a millionaire and says "you dirty, greedy, capitalist piece of trash! Give me half your money!", is that an expression of kindness and unity?

I could go on, but I want to give you a chance to respond.

So, with all that said, why would the world be a better place without religion?

Oh please... did religion ever "send train loads of jews to the gas chambers" ? Only by opposing god, nazis did such horrors, and stalin mass murdered purges , much worse harm than any crusades.

The more without religion , the more those would repeat!

And who promotes HARMING a HUMAN fetus? How can harming a victim, thousands! or promoted that, be a "good" person?

Without religion no. Without religious institutions BIG YES.
I do think a lot of people get better with a thought about a good god. Belief is a strong tool. Placebo is a relativly strong funded theory.

While religious institutions may help give that feeling to people they are generally bad at actually doing good. Their rules bring misery to people since their founding. The work for money as much as every other coroporation and they have been doing so for ages.
Last but not least, its horrible what people do in their name while thinking they do good while at the same time being outright evil. That is to be expected though. If your morality is based on outdated rules of course you are going to harm people.

The Morality probiem goes even further though, specifically christian morality system is based on fear of punishment. If they realize this punishment isn't real, or they think they already are doomed nothing stops them from becoming a horrible person. Only a morality system outside religious beliefs can survive a shattered beliefe.
When it comes to right wing conservatives christians it goes even further than that. They are not only driven by outdated rules but they add a massive amount of hypocrisy on top of it. This makes a lot of them purely evil because they force others to live by the rules they dont even set for themselve and they do this with harmful and dangerous methods.

Tldr, religion can help people, religios institutions have problems but in general they are fine if updated, conservatist christians are just pure evil.

Yes. We would be probably technologically 1000 years further without dogmas of Christianity. Middle east was cultural center of sciences but Islam killed it all and still keeps it backward.
Generally cultures without dominant religion prosper and are better off, because when religions have to compete they can't show their dark side like Christianity did while dark medieval time and islam does still today.

Religions are the basic building blocks of language, laws, cultures and civilisations. Without them, there would be nothing but hordes of rogues and bandits fighting and stealing from one another.
