What christians say is true in a mythical sense, on a deeper level, but not on the surface. ㅤ

It's almost 50/50 chance. If you do this "personal spiritual growth" you will be able to handle things better. But if you do this whole rules, taboos, shaming, pure submission not in a disciplined and grateful sense but an automated doormat sense, then you only dissolve your sense of self, and when an unwanted impulse strikes you won't have strong enough of a self to resist, or overcome difficulties. But it's not entirely black and white.
