If Christ grants us eternity in heaven just for having faith he died for our sins then why does he need to develop our character here on Earth?

I mean we're not worthy of heaven and it's by God's grace alone we recieve it. Since God is omniscient. So he already knows what we are capable of, our strengths and weaknesses, how far we can be pushed before we break, and if we stay broken or can rise again stronger than before. So why do it? When we'll still never be good enough?

Because we all touch each other's lives? And the stronger and healthier you are spiritually the more you help lift others. Help them carry their cross until they can carry it alone. Who knows when you may need them to help you carry yours.

Simple. Because we are in fact not saved by grace alone or by faith alone. True, we do need both faith and grace, but they are not all that is required to be saved. A teacher might know that a student is intelligent and capable, but the student still needs to study and do his schoolwork to graduate.

In the same way, we still need to be baptized (John 3), do good works (Matthew 25), and most importantly, we need to receive His Body and Blood in Holy Communion, lest we have no life in us (John 6). If we believe, we also need to ACT. And yes, part of that means that we need to suffer and endure. He tells us that those who endure to the end through suffering and tribulations will be saved. He tells us that we will have troubles in the world, but to "take heart, for I have overcome the world" (John 16.33). There is a good handful of other verses from the New Testament that tell us of suffering and its purpose.

We are told that we are tested through suffering like gold is tested in fire (1 Peter 1.6-7) and that we suffer for the sake of Christ (Philippians 1.29), for example. Christianity is a religion as much of the internal life as it is of the external. That's basically what is communicated to us in the Sermon on the Mount, particularly in Matthew 5; it may not be explicitly stated, but it is all but implied throughout.
