In the Bible, Abraham and Lot’s social groups were quarrelling, so Abraham told his nephew Lot they needed to separate and Abraham let Lot choose the land he wanted while Abraham would take the left over.
Lot choose what appeared to be superior and gave Abraham what looked to be a less desirable choice. Not predicting or knowing, God would later destroy the land Lot chose to punish the people who lived there.
What I get out of this verse, is that when you try to take advantage of others; you attract bad luck through future losses. And when you allow people privileges they did not earn, or allow them undue privileges at your expense, God protects and increases your future finances or results outside the monetary world.

I think the moral of the story is that you should always be honourable in your dealings with others. Not because you will gain materially, but because it's the right thing to do. In the story Abraham is more than fair, while Lot is a bit of a jerk. Being a jerk can bring short term gain, but in the long time it destroys social cohesion. We can see examples all around the world of societies failing because of lack of moral values.
