Family of biblical literalists. They genuinely believe and take for granted that people once lived for many hundreds of years, and that Noah's Ark was actually a thing. They find evolution inconceivable, but don't ask questions about how koalas swam thousands of miles to get from Australia to Mesopotamia to board a boat constructed by a 500-year-old man to survive a global flood caused by the fall of a second ocean once magically suspended in the sky (supposedly people lived longer because the "waters above" blocked excess solar radiation, and no longer did after it came down) which left no geological evidence.

They expect me to believe this along with them. I don't wish to insult them, but really... come on.

I've kept quiet for years. It was always easier to tolerate the nonsense than to listen to my mother fret about whether she'd see me in heaven, but a serious gulf has opened up between us.

I could never stand ideas that we're not allowed to question. I'm repulsed by the belief that anyone who doesn't think like we do is not only destined to be tortured for all eternity, but *deserves* it. It's shaped their views of people of other religions (and other practitioners of Christianity with more liberal viewpoints) and I can't stand listening to them talk about it.

I've been told in no uncertain terms that if I leave the faith, they'll disinherit me and cut all contact. I don't want to lose my family, I don't reject other aspects of Christianity, but I'm sick of meekly nodding along with this stuff year after year.
